PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND: A newly engaged couple have been charged with the murder of the woman's ex-boyfriend's mother.

Twenty three-year-old Jack Doherty and 18-year-old Shaylyn Moran were arrested on Thursday, January 2. Police say the pair fatally shot 54-year-old Cheryl Smith at her home on New Year's Day using a 3D printed gun.

Doherty is facing around seven charges which include firing the gun and also assaulting Pawtucket detective Justin Gould. As reported by WJAR, Moran has been charged with murder and the intent to commit homicide.

According to The Boston Globe, the police claim that Moran is the former girlfriend of Smith's 21-year-old son Leonard Troufield. Officials discovered Smith with many gunshot wounds to the chest and she was later pronounced dead at Rhode Island Hospital.

According to detective Sgt. Christopher LeFort, Moran and Troufield had a very volatile and explosive relationship. He was arrested in October on charges of domestic violence. He was at his mother's home at the time the shooting took place but was not injured. Pawtucket detectives found Doherty and Moran at a Hampton Inn nearby and recovered a 9mm gun from them.

The police shared that the gun resembled a 3D gun in images that Doherty had shared on Facebook. A Facebook page that reportedly belongs to Doherty shows the pair after the incident with the comment, "We some fighters and some shooters." On NYE's a post on the page showed Doherty taking a selfie as he points a gun into the mirror. The picture was captioned, "Bloody Boy Santana."

The couple has been detained and are being held at the Adult Correctional Institutions. They will have a bail hearing on January 16. A friend of Smith took to social media to say that she was a kind person.

The Heritage Park YMCA in Pawtucket released a statement saying, "Everyone at the Heritage Park YMCA and the YMCA of Pawtucket expresses our tremendous sorrow for this senseless tragedy. Ms. Smith was a beloved member of the community and our childcare team and reached hundreds of children during her tenure with us. Our immediate concern is for Ms. Smith’s family during this incredibly difficult time."

"As we continue to process this devastating news, we remain vigilant in our dedication to serving as a pillar for the entire Pawtucket community."
