At the beginning of 'Quiz' Episode 3, ITV's Head Of Entertainment attends the trial of Major Charles Ingram (Matthew Macfadyen) and Diana Ingram (Sian Clifford) and their alleged co-conspirator Tecwen Whittock (Michael Jibson) and says, "I love a good ITV courtroom drama." It's a joke of course, as for most of the episode, that's exactly what we are watching. But apart from that, it encapsulates the legal drama that shook the UK in the 2000s, and the big coughing scandal that pushed the Major and his wife into the national limelight due to the allegations of them cheating ITV of a million pounds.

So did they actually cheat on the quiz show, 'Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?'. While trying to answer this question, the show emphasises that it doesn't matter. Throughout the episode, the Ingrams are targeted, attacked by neighbours, their children are bullied in school and even their dog is shot. They are looked at as fools and comedians and laughed at by the jury members in the court. Their lawyer Sonia Woodley (Helen McCrory) determinedly proves them innocent as she says that the company saw what they wanted, and not the truth. They wanted to believe that Whittock's cough was pushing them to give the right answer during the quiz show. But they don't know each other. Whittock had a cough ailment. There were so many coughs in the studio, why was only Whittock's picked up? There are allegations of suspicious behaviour from the couple and Diana's brother throughout the night. Why was Adrian so desperate to make phone calls, despite being told several times that he wasn't allowed to do so? Diana says that he was trying to talk to their ailing father. You have to admit, Woodley makes a better case for defence.

In the flashbacks, we see Diana coaching Charles for the show, asking him questions and trying to make him brush up on sports. And that makes it clear where the show stands on their innocence. But surely, there were too many coincidences that night. However, all said and done, there is still a guilty verdict for Charles and Diana and they had to endure a suspended sentence. The basic point of the show remains, and as Woodley says, the truth is what we decide it to be.

At the end, we see the montage of the real-life Ingrams being hounded by the press and a reaffirmation that they maintain their innocence till date.
