Trump exhibiting 'signs of delusion' amid impeachment inquiry, claim psychiatrists in letter to Congress
Three top psychiatrists in the United States have reportedly sent an urgent letter to the Senate Judiciary Committee claiming President Donald Trump is exhibiting "signs of delusion" amid the ongoing impeachment inquiry against him.
The experts, Yale Medical School Professor Dr Bandy Lee, George Washington University Professor Dr John Zinner, and former CIA profiler Dr Jerrold Post, wrote a joint letter, accompanied by a petition signed by over 350 mental health professionals in the country, backing their claims.
"We are speaking out at this time because we are convinced that, as the time of possible impeachment approaches, Donald Trump has the real potential to become ever more dangerous, a threat to the safety of our nation," the letter read, according to Yahoo. The experts also warned that "failing to monitor or to understand the psychological aspects [of impeachment on Mr Trump], or discounting them, could lead to catastrophic outcomes."
"We implore Congress to take these danger signs seriously and to constrain his destructive impulses," the letter continued. "We and many others are available to give important relevant recommendations as well as to educate the public so that we can maximize our collective safety."
The letter, however, did not elaborate on the specific threats to the public safety they believe Trump poses. The trio also stated that they are willing to testify on the president's mental state during the impeachment inquiry. Dr. Lee, while talking to The Independent, said that Trump, according to her, is showing a "great deal of cruelty and vindictiveness" in his "accelerated, repetitive tweets." She added that his tweets alone are evidence that Trump is exhibiting signs of "delusion."
Ever since Trump took office, in January 2017, critics, medical experts, and some of his political rivals have proffered doubts over his mental state. Their concerns, however, were dissipated after White House physician Dr. Ronny Jackson, in January 2018, declared that the president "has absolutely no cognitive or mental issues." Trump, himself, has refuted claims over his mental instability, calling himself an "extremely stable genius." His doctor, after the test, had revealed that Trump got a 30 out of 30 on a screen for dementia called the Montreal Cognitive Assessment.
