'Project Runway' Season 18: Is the Karlie Kloss-Christian Siriano show worth the hype? Think glitter, foil and lots of future
'Project Runway' is in its 18th year and looking completely gorgeous. The contestants are a bit on the edge as they are being put in teams of two right at the beginning of the show and quite a few are apprehensive about it, given that they have no experience of working with each other.
However, they deal with it and get on with their fabric shopping, which turns out to be quite the challenge in itself because of limited time and spoilt-for-choice designers.
Overseeing the workflow is Christian Siriano, who interacts with each of the 16 designers to share with them his two cents on the fabrics they should use and colors they would want to pick. The first round challenge isn't novel — it's all about space.
The participants are tasked with creating space jumpsuits and happy-hour cocktail dresses that represent the theme of the round.
Even though the vibe is different and the look and feel are a tad bit dissimilar than last year, the energy is still the same. The workroom is still crowded with a bunch of talented individuals who are losing it now and then in a bid to finish first and best.
Christian's occasional pep talk and tips are helping though, but when it has to go wrong it will go wrong. Some are worried about the fabric, others concerned about the fit.
Dayoung Kim, who calls herself perfectionist, breaks down after her asymmetric lines were not falling as it should have. Asim Bibi, on the other hand, is stressed over her hemlines, which is all over the place.
The buzzer goes off and everyone's ready to showcase their work. The maiden episode sets the tone right — a busy workroom, stuffed with talented creators, and a hell lot of energy.
So, what's new? Is it worth the hype? Totally! What's best is the makers have picked their list of contestants well. 'Project Runway' has the oldest designer ever — 64-year-old Nancy Volpe-Beringer — competing on the show which is quite a commendable feat!
Even though we have seen all of this before, there seems to be a renewed energy on the show, maybe because it has returned to its roots.
