'Prodigal Son' Episode 3 may finally give Malcolm and fans some answers about the girl in the box

Nightmares about a girl in a box keep coming back to Malcolm ever since he paid a visit to his father Dr. Martin Whitly (Michael Sheen) in the pilot episode

Spoilers ahead for Season 1 Episode 2 'Annihilator' of 'Prodigal Son'

The girl in the box is one mystery Malcolm Bright (Tom Payne) can't solve as of yet. Nightmares about a girl in a box keep coming back to Malcolm ever since he paid a visit to his father Dr. Martin Whitly (Michael Sheen) in the pilot episode.

Malcolm refuses to pay heed to the warnings from his mother Jessica (Bellamy Young) to keep away from his father. The criminal profiler was already suffering through mental health problems — night terrors, tremors and PTSD — which only worsened since his meeting with The Surgeon.

But one particular nightmare keeps coming back to Malcolm — one that he can't put to rest till he finds out what really happened.

By the looks of the promo released by the channel, episode three will throw some light on what happened the night that Malcolm saw the girl in the box.

According to Malcolm, at least in theory, his father drugged him (possibly) with chloroform. He also points to a gap in his memory that he cannot credit to anything.

Before young Malcolm loses consciousness to the chloroform, he hears his father say, "You're my sweet, sweet boy."

In order to know the truth, a desperate Malcolm even asks his mother, only to be brushed off with a warning. "I know you think these memories are real — they're not," Jessica is seen telling him in the promo.

She has, time and again, pointed out that the repercussions of his new-found proximity with his father would be grave. Jessica also says something off that makes us think that she most definitely has more information than she lets on.

"You have no idea what your father is capable of," she warns Malcolm. Does she know more about the girl in the box? Does she know who the girl really was? Did she, and we don't want to mention that obviously, help Dr. Martin?

The promo also shows The Surgeon helping Malcolm, in his own way, investigate the case he is on. "Fear has always been your stumbling block," he says.

It is almost a push to Malcolm to put his fear aside and venture all-in. How does Malcolm channel inputs from his father in episode three? 'Prodigal Son' airs Mondays at 9 PM ET/PT on Fox.
