Spoilers ahead for Episode 3 'Fear Response' of 'Prodigal Son'

The last episode of 'Prodigal Son' made some very astonishing revelations.

We now know that - or at least we can positively theorize - that Malcolm Bright's (Tom Payne) mother, Jessica (Bellamy Young), was aware of the "dangerous" extent that her husband Dr. Martin Whitly (Michael Sheen) could have gone to.

Bright had been looking to know more about the mysterious girl in the box. Despite prodding her repeatedly, Jessica doesn't budge - she keeps telling him that there never was such a girl and that he only imagined her to be. When he remained persistent, she told him to move and stop going back into the past on the pretext of looking for answers, that he should let go and move on as she has. When he asked his serial killer father about the girl in the box, he reiterates that there never was such a girl - adding that since Bright doesn't trust him, he should check police records or ask his mother (classic family drama!).

So, Bright uses chloroform to revive the memories of that night. And what he saw literally woke him up from a chemically-induced stupor.

The night that Bright saw the girl in the box, his mother was right there. As he approaches the box, Jessica yanks him back and tells him he shouldn't be here - "That doesn't concern you", she tells him. This leads up to believe that Jessica has been, to some extent, aware of The Surgeon.

In the promo for next week's episode shared by Fox, Jessica is seen in a conversation with Dr. Whitly. It looks like it is from the same night she has the aforementioned conversation with a young Bright - she is wearing the same red dress. Going by the way the couple is dressed, it looks like they were on their way out to a fancy event when this happened.

We can also see Bright ask Gil (Lou Diamond Phillips) to give him access to his mother's testimony from the time that his father was arrested. Gil passes on the evidence to Bright but warns him that he might not be ready to see what it contains. "You sure you wanna see this?" he asks him. "I need to know the truth", Bright says.

Later, we see Bright prod further. "There is something you don't want me to know," he tells her. "Your father is a serial killer. Yet I'm still the monster", she tells Bright before slapping him.

As Bright is shown watching the tapes, he closes in on his mother and sadly touches her face. What do the interrogation tapes hold? Why did Bright have that sad expression on his face? Was it a result of betrayal or empathy?

'Prodigal Son' airs Mondays at 9 PM on Fox.
