Bok-gi decides to use Yoo Byung-jun to get to Edward Kim, her former partner who now goes by Kim Jae-wook. He is now an employee of GK's secret team of shadow agents and Bok-gi is out for blood this time around after being abandoned by him. He not only left her hanging but had also taken her share of the money as well. She asks Byung-jun to allow her to become a part of his election campaign team. She has taken the alias she used while she cons people and that is of Sophia Chung and she introduces herself to Edward Kim as such. She also says that he is going to lead a team in helping Byung-jun with his social media presence. However, Bok-gi is operating by herself without informing her current partner Joo-eun or Jeong-hwan of her plans to work with Byung-jun.

So Joo-eun and Jeong-hwan attempt to figure out what exactly Bok-gi's plans are and that is why Joo-eun poses as a woman who works at "Gentlemen's Club". She tried to find out what her friend is up to by following her into the club and overhearing her conversation with Edward Kim that the two of them have in private. At this point, what one must remember is that Jeong-hwan has promised Byung-jun's enemy in the upcoming elections that he would work for this campaign in exchange for his identity being reopened to Jeong-hwan and Joo-eun's safety. However, all of this might become impossible because of Bok-gi's impulsive plan. As Bok-gi and Edward Kim's confrontation goes sideways, it becomes apparent that Bok-gi is out for revenge. She is taunting Edward Kim by messing up his well-laid plans. Byung-jun has allowed her to be a part of his team because she has promised him that she can access the late president Choi Kyung-hwan's secret ledger -- the black book -- so that he can bring candidate Kwon down.

Meanwhile, Joo-eun who is spying on Bok-gi, Edward Kim, and Byung-jun gets caught and her identity is revealed. She is used as bait to lure Jeong-hwan in, and the two of them are locked up in a room. At this point, we also see Byung-jun try to assess if the ledger is at GK. Edward Kim, of course, denies the same. Bok-gi, however, is ready for this. Edward is not aware that Bok-gi has a copy of the ledger or that she has figured out the secret of the ledger. So Bok-gi uses this opportunity to bring about a rift between Byung-jun and GK's Edward Kim.

When put under pressure, Edward Kim agrees to track down the said ledger, and this is while he had his hands in the copy of the ledger. In keeping with the show's messy treatment of the narrative, we flit between the past and present as well as Jeong-hwan, Joo-eun being captured, and Bok-gi, Edward Kim's confrontation. On one hand, there is Edward who seems to have an underlying intention in wanting to work together with Byung-jun, and on the other hand, there is a captive situation. Turns out, the man who had killed Edward Kim's father was none other than Byung-jun.

Then there is the lawyer and her very influential assemblyman father who has decided to throw their weight behind Kwon Hyuk-jang. So the lawyer joins hands with Jeong-hwan and in addition to his identity being restored, he is also promised that he will be reinstated in GK not as a shadow agent but as a white-collar worker instead. The Madame who runs the Gentlemen's Club is on their side too and she helps Team Kwon learn of all the details regarding Team Yoo's meeting with Edward Kim and Bok-gi. However, this Madame is double-crossing, because she is originally on Edward Kim's team. With every minute, the plot is only getting more complex and the knots that have been tied since the beginning are tightening around Joo-eun and Jeong-hwan's neck. So while we are not enjoying the messy writing, we are intrigued by the adding layers of complexity.

At this point, Joo-eun realizes a crucial lesson, and that is to be wary around Jeong-hwan because he betrayed Bok-gi's confidence by revealing her true identity to lawyer Oh Hyun-kyung. Joo-eun is conflicted because she remembers the lawyer from when her father was imprisoned and to see Jeong-hwan work with her with no second thoughts has her second-guessing her decision to trust him. When she asks him how long he had known the lawyer, his answer shocks her. He attempts to convince her by saying there are things about shadow agents that she will never understand, but is that any excuse really?

Right after, he leaves to go meet someone while Joo-eun ends up meeting Hanson who tells Joo-eun that Jeong-hwan knew Director Choi's driver and that information regarding him was on Jeong-hwan's computer. She finds out that Jeong-hwan had gotten this driver to write a will while he was anesthetized and semi-conscious. So this makes her doubt him more, however, Jeong-hwan on the other hand is in touch with the cop about reopening the case of the driver's death. The cop figures out that that case is fishy and so he looks into it further and speculates that the driver may very well be alive and he says as much to Jeong-hwan as well. So why would a driver fake his own death?

All of this and more has to be tied up in the next three episodes. 'Private Lives' airs on JTBC on Wednesdays and Thursdays at 9:30 pm KST and can be streamed on Netflix outside of South Korea.
