1987 saw Arnold Schwarzenegger taking the world by storm with one of the most well-made horror action flicks in the form of ‘Predator’. Although the movie received mixed reviews upon its release, it went on to gain a “cult classic” status and was nominated in the Best Visual Effects category at the Academy Awards. Since then, a lot of directors tried to replicate the success of the original one but failed to do so. The first movie was set in 1987 and saw Arnold’s character Dutch wandering the jungles of Guatemala for a special ops mission, along with his team. However, soon the mission turns deadly when they encounter an alien creature known as The Predator.

More than 40 years after the original movie hit the screens, Hulu is set to expand the franchise with the upcoming movie ‘Prey’, which is reportedly a prequel to the original movie. So, when we say that it’s a prequel, what year is the movie set it? Does it go way back in history to tell us how Predators have been a part of our civilization since ancient times? Or it was just a few years before the original movie that the creature landed on planet Earth. Let’s take a look at the timeline of all the ‘Predator’ movies, especially ‘Prey’.

Like we said earlier, the original ‘Predator’ movie was set in 1987 and even had a character who knew about the evil creature. A woman named Anna was held captive by Dutch and his team, who kept on telling them about this creature and how he killed people. On the other hand, the sequel to the original movie, titled ‘Predator 2’, was released in 1997 and took place in Los Angeles, California. In the movie, the Predator was living among the urban population of the city and wreaked havoc. The alien creature would go on to feature in the spin-off movie ‘Alien vs Predator’. Two of the most dangerous creatures fought each other on an island off the coast of Antarctica.

The film’s sequel, ‘Alien vs. Predator: Requiem”, was set in 2007 and once again, both creatures entered the urban setting to square off against each other. Meanwhile, the last two movies, ‘Predators’ (2010) and ‘The Predator’ (2018), followed the footsteps of the previous movies because the 2010 movie was set in an isolated place while the 2018 flick took place in a populated US town.

Now, coming to the latest entry in the franchise, ‘Prey’, the trailers show us that it has a setting of an earlier timeline and this time they go way back in history to show how the alien creature made his way to the Earth. The movie takes place almost 268 years before the events of the 1987 film and this time, the location is the Great Plains of North America. The latest movie in the ‘Predator’ universe sees the ruthless Comanche Tribe wandering the land and catching prey in order to feed themselves. However, things change when one of their skilled warriors named Naru (Amber Midthunder) realizes that the prey she is stalking is actually a highly-evolved alien from another planet.

The story of ‘Prey’ brings another layer to the franchise. In the previous movies, we got to know that Predators have been coming to the Earth for a very long time, but this is the first time a movie will be showing how these alien creatures are deeply-rooted in the history of Earth. But that doesn’t mean that the history of Predators hasn’t been studied before in any kind of form. The ‘Predator’ comics have frequently shown how historical these figures have been and a glimpse of that was shown in ‘Predator 2’ as well. If you have seen, the second movie in the franchise, then in one of the scenes, an elder Predator throws a gun at Danny Glover’s Mike Harrigan. As soon as he looks at it, we see ‘Raphael Adolini 1715’ written on the gun.

Now, these three words have a history and it was shown in the comic series ‘A Decade of Dark Horse’, which showed that the alien creature fought the fictional pirate named Adolini in 1715.

‘Prey’ has a very good chance of giving viewers what has never been seen before on screen and if they do it right, it will open doors for so many things to be explored in the Predator universe. There’s a lot of excitement about the movie because of its setting and how it actually takes a traditional approach to telling stories. This will be the first time that the entire movie will also be available in the Comanche language.

Will ‘Prey’ manage to win over the audiences? Let’s wait and watch.
