After meeting last month in perhaps the most chaotic debate, President Donald Trump and Democratic contender Joe Biden participated in their second and final presidential debate on Thursday, October 22. During the debate, Trump made an odd reference to Perry Mason

During the debate, Trump said, "We’re gonna give you a court case. You need Perry Mason!". Perry Mason is an HBO legal drama set in 1932, in Los Angeles and based on novels and short stories written by Erle Stanley Gardner. In the show, the main character is Perry Mason, a defense lawyer who is is often described by fans as an "unbeatable defense attorney". Mason features in more than 80 novels and short stories, most of which involve murder trials.

As soon as Trump referred to the fictional character, social media was abuzz with reactions, sharing the video where Trump is seen making the comment one wrote, "We’re gonna give you a court case. You need Perry Mason!”  @realDonaldTrump #Debate2020." Actor and writer Aisha Tyler said, "Perry Mason is super confused rn. Also Perry Mason is not a real person. #Debates2020."

Slamming Trump, another one wrote, "I love how when Donald Trump speaks, he either references niche bullshit from Fox News or re-runs from TV Land. I mean where else am I going to hear about "Perry Mason" and conspiracy theories in a single sentence? #PresidentialDebate2020," while another one wrote, "and HE talks about Perry Mason... thats the 50's and 60's folks... like the SUBURBAN WOMEN who love him for getting them more water."

Referring to Trump, another one wrote, "This debate is wild man , coyotes, low IQ people , cages, Criminal justice reform , least racist person in the room, Ab Lincoln , “We gonna Perry Mason them”, debates will never be the same after this one man." Another one wrote, "If what I'm seeing on my timeline is accurate, the candidate who has spent the last few months declaring his opponent to be too old just made a Perry Mason reference."

Another one questioned if Trump was "stoned" and wrote, "Did trump just evoke Perry Mason? Does he know that he was fictional? Why am I even asking? He is so stoned I doubt he even knows his own name at this point."
