George RR Martin says Trump took a p**s on democracy, ‘Game of Thrones’ fans retort, ‘Write your damn book’

The first presidential debate 2020 brought President Donald Trump and Democratic nominee Joe Biden face-to-face in Cleveland on October 29, 2020. Moderated by Chris Wallace of Fox News, the debacle soon turned into a name-calling affair and it turned out to be a "national embarrassment". As people from all across the nation criticized the distasteful showdown, guess who joined the brigade?

'Game of Thrones' author George RR Martin smashed his way into the limelight and expressed his opinion on the presidential debate. "I have seen every presidential debate ever televised.... and I have never seen anything like what I witnessed last night," he wrote.

In a long blog post titled 'Ugly, Ugly, Ugly', he penned down his thoughts and wrote, "Donald Trump was bad four years ago in his debates with Hillary Clinton, but last night he set new records for being offensive, obnoxious, and rude. He ranted, he raved, he shouted, he interrupted again and again and again and AGAIN, refusing to let Joe Biden finish a sentence without breaking in. He spoke over Biden, he spoke over the moderator, he ignored the questions, he ignored the rules — rules his own campaign had negotiated and agreed to — he told shocking lies, and doubled down when called on them, he engaged in smears and personal attacks, he tried to discredit the result of the vote before most of America has even voted."

He then added, "This was not the behavior of a president. This was not the behavior of a presidential candidate. This was the behavior of a schoolyard bully, an obnoxious child, the tinpot strongman of some third world dictatorship."

Reiterating events from the past, he ended his post by saying: "Donald Trump disgraced the presidency last night. He took a piss all over democracy. All other issues aside — and there are hugely important issues being decided this year, from race relations to climate change to the pandemic — last night’s 'debate' proved one thing beyond any doubt. Joe Biden is a decent human being, and Donald Trump is not."

His tweet soon grabbed many eyeballs and collected over 2,000 likes in no time. However, not many seemed to care about his political opinion. The 72-year-old was trolled as people demanded him to write his "damn book". "I don't care your feeling, I just want Winds of Winter," one said. Another wrote, "Write the damn book!!!" One even went on to say: "You know what else is offensive? Where is the book? Finish it!"

Infamous for the delay in his book 'The Winds of Winter', the author has been in the news for not having completed his sixth installment after the last book released 11 years ago. Mocking him, one posted, "This tweet has more words than pages written for Winds of Winter." Another wrote: "Kind of like how you are making us wait for the book." One even went on to say: "Worst thing I’ve seen since the last season of Game of Thrones." One Twitter user said, "Hey George how about you turn off the tv and finish your books."

However, many fans soon came to his defense and said, "Wow, writing is hard, people. It’s wild that so many people are attacking someone who’s work they supposedly like. Wow." Another posted, "Thank you for sharing your opinion on this. Those in the comments who are shouting about the next book really need to sort out their priorities."

"I cannot believe the comments here. Y'all care more about a book than your own health care, or a coordinated pandemic response that could save the economy? Get an imagination and write some fan fiction to occupy your mind, or find a great undiscovered fantasy author, then vote," one tweet read and another said, "The replies to George on here are pretty illuminating. I'm thankful for all the hard works he's done in building a world from scratch and inviting us all in. Writing is a process, it takes time. Especially if you write at the caliber that GRRM does."

However, there seems to be some hope that the book would be out on the shelves soon. Due to the Covid-19 lockdown, he decided to stay in a cabin and has finally finished a few chapters in a week’s time. "I know there are a lot of people out there who are very angry with me that Winds of Winter isn’t finished, and I’m mad about that myself. I wished I finished it four years ago. I wished it was finished now,” Martin told Entertainment Weekly in an interview.

If his speed continues, he may finish the book sooner than expected, you never know.
