Presidential Debate 2020 Fact Check: Was Biden wrong to say 525 migrant children have been separated from parents?
The final Presidential Debate, which was held in Nashville, was as dramatic as the previous one with no dearth of disruptions as candidates President Doland Trump and former vice president Joe Biden used every opportunity to drag each other down with regard to several issues.
They were presented with multiple topics to discuss, which started off with the coronavirus pandemic and eventually touched upon other foreign policies, controversies and immigration laws by the Trump administration, which has reportedly wreaked havoc in the lives of thousands of families. Biden and Trump soon engaged in an intense debate when it was pointed out that over 500 children should be reunited with their families who were separated at the US border over the years.
Trump said, "The children are brought here by coyotes and lots of bad people, cartels, and they're brought here and they used to use them to get into our country. We now have a strong a border as we've ever had. We're over 400 miles of brand-new wall. You see the numbers. We let people in but they have to come in legally." When asked about strategies and policies and reuniting children with their parents, Trump said, “We're working on it very — we're trying very hard."
Much-irked by Trump’s response Biden said, "Their kids were ripped from their arms and separated. And now they cannot find over 500 sets of those parents and those kids are alone. Nowhere to go. Nowhere to go. It's criminal. It's criminal." When Biden notes, “You have 525 kids not knowing where in God’s name they’re gonna be and lost their parents," Trump simply says “good”.
Fact check: ACLU lawyers have reportedly said in a legal filing that they haven’t been able to find the parents of 545 migrant children who were separated from their parents at the US-Mexican border, according to NBC News.
Trump’s response to an issue as sensitive as this isn’t being well received by people for obvious reasons. A significant number of them have slammed the president for being “utterly repulsive” and insensitive.
One tweeted, "@JoeBiden: You have 525 kids not knowing if they will ever see their parents @realDonaldTrump: Good! Utterly repulsive!" Another added, "trump saying 'good' when biden states that 525 kids are missing...what a horrible man #PresidentialDebate2020." One tweeted, "@JoeBiden: "You have 525 kids who will not be reunited with their parents." Donald Trump: 'Good.' Vote him out. #PresidentialDebate2020 #Debates2020."
