Lottery officials' need for additional time to complete necessary “security protocols" caused the drawing of Powerball’s record-breaking $1.9 billion jackpot to be delayed. After the 11pm drawing, Powerball issued a statement announcing the delay. It is unclear how long lottery officials could take to resolve the issue.

“Powerball has strict security requirements that must be met by all 48 lotteries before a drawing can occur,” officials said in a statement, according to New York Post. “When the required security protocols are complete, the drawing will be performed under the supervision of lottery security officials and independent auditors.”

Powerball players across the country waited restlessly for the latest record-smashing drawing. It could give them a prize of $1.9 billion or $929.1 million in one lump-sum payment. Monday night’s expected Powerball drawing would be the 41st consecutive one that had no jackpot winner. A number of customers did cash in on prizes of $1 million or $2 million during the span, dating back to early August, but no one bagged the grand prize.

Social media turned to jokes after the delay, one one user writing on Twitter, "In 2022, a billion-dollar lottery drawing is delayed because there are technical difficulties with a machine that rolls five white balls down a plastic tube." Another user joked, "I know I won that powerball and the 'delay' is a plot against me". "Can’t wait for the Powerball Delay Scandal miniseries/documentary on Netflix in 5 months," one user said.

"How exactly do ping pong balls experience a technical delay? Looking at you, Powerball," one user wrote, while another said, "I’ve never been so annoyed that there’s been a delay in finding out I’m a loser." "The irony of this delay w/Powerball happening the night before a blood moon lunar eclipse is not lost on me whatsoever," one user commented.
