As President Donald Trump embattles the impeachment drive against him in the Senate, the people of America remain split on whether the incumbent should be removed from office. According to one poll that was released on Monday, January 20, 51 percent of the people said he should be convicted and removed.

The House of Representatives impeached Trump last month over allegations that he pressured the president of Ukraine to probe domestic rival Joe Biden and his son Hunter over corruption charges. The US though has remained polarized over Trump’s impeachment, the Senate procedure of which was delayed over the sending of the impeachment articles from the House.

According to the CNN/SSRS poll, 45 percent of Americans said the Senate should not vote to convict and remove the president while four percent said they failed to have an opinion on the same. The poll results came a day before the Senate was set to begin the proceedings in the impeachment trial.

The percentage favoring Trump's removal has gone up since December

In December, the same poll showed 47 percent of Americans saying Trump should not be removed while 45 percent wanted to see him evicted from the White House.
The latest poll covered 1,156 respondents and of them, 58 percent felt Trump abused his presidential power while 57 percent said he hindered the House from investigating him properly.

If seen party-wise, while 89 percent of the Democrats believe Trump should be convicted and removed from office, the number is only eight percent in the Republican camp.
It is unlikely that Trump will be impeached by the GOP-controlled Senate and he is still the favourites to remain the face of his party in the run-up to this year’s presidential election.
