Usually, if hip-hop artists manage to deliver a successful debut album, they cash-in on the success with a follow-up album at the earliest and the fans of American rapper Playboi Carti expected the same when he had proved he is here for the long run with his debut album ‘Die Lit’ in May 2018. Within a gap of a few months, he started teasing his sophomore album but now, it is December 2020 and his second studio effort titled ‘Whole Lotta Red’ is nowhere to be seen. Here’s all you need to know about Carti’s much-awaited project.

Release date

After teasing his fans for far too long, the rapper will finally drop ‘Whole Lotta Red’ on December 25, 2020. He took to his official Twitter account on December 22, 2020, and tweeted the dates, “12/25” along with an emoticon of kissing red lips.  The much-hyped album is now also up for pre-order here.

The Atlanta rapper took to his official Instagram account on December 10, Thursday, to announce the much-awaited release of his new project. He shared a slide of three pictures and captioned the pic as, “i kAnT bELieVE mY ALBUm iS AbOUT 2 dRoP. wTF  ps . i goT A tANK @ THe cAsTLE n0w thx. YE.” However, he left the fans agitated and disappointed yet again as ‘Whole Lotta Red’ did not hit the Internet, as promised. Well, this is not the first time Carti left the fans furious as it was also assumed the album might hit the Internet on December 6, 2020, but again, that did not happen.

Hip-hop artist Mario Judah had also taken it to Twitter with his one-minute video in the first week of December asking Carti to release ‘Whole Lotta Red.’ “On every religion there is...if you don’t drop WLR before December 6th...I will do it for you ni***aaaaaaaaa @playboicarti” He again took to Twitter recently and stated, “But nah fr tho my ni**a...if you end up lying to us again tonight...then its going to be “Playboi Judah” forever keep your word!!!!!! @playboicarti”

DJ Akademiks was also left disappointed when Carti did not fulfil his promise. He also took to Twitter and shared, “I literally sold my soul to get this info for Carti fans but I’m hearing Carti album isn’t dropping tonight but will drop on Christmas... and hearing Kanye the exec producer of it along with Matthew Williams from Givenchy. That’s the gift he got for y’all Flushed face.. this exclusive info.”

Now, fans will have to wait for the official release date to be announced by the rapper himself.

Album cover

In April 2020, Carti took to his official Instagram account and shared a mysterious photo which fans assumed to be the cover art of his album ‘Whole Lotta Red,’ as reported by Revolt TV. The Instagram picture shows the ‘Magnolia’ hitmaker sitting alone in a dimly lit space with a dark blue background. His face is not clearly visible in the post and maintaining the suspense, he did not even caption the picture. Interestingly, he never denied or accepted whether it was the cover art for his sophomore album or not.

On December 22, 2020, Carti finally revealed the official cover art on his Twitter account and captioned the post as, “AHhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. I t0LD U ! I L0v3 u.”

Concept

In June 2019, Carti sat with The Fader magazine where he did speak about ‘Whole Lotta Red.’ Speaking on the progress of the album, he had then said, “I could be done if I wanted to. I’m just trying to top s**t. I might make the hardest song ever tomorrow. “I got a whole ‘nother tape with this ni**a. That’s why my head’s f**ked up. This shit could go on my album, but if it goes on the album, then we gotta change the whole thing.”

Then in July 2019, Carti announced during his performance at The Rave /Eagles Club he was trying to release the album within the following sixty days with no guest appearances, as published by the website Genius. “I’m trying to drop that s**t in the next 60 days. I ain’t gon' lie, it feel like we worked too hard for this moment so I'ma do this shit with no features.”

Cut to November 2020, Hypebeast reported that the Atlanta rapper had shared an Instagram post again giving hope to people for his new record. He shared an image of a makeshift recording studio and also went on Instagram Live sharing a snippet of a track expected to appear on the project.

Tracklist

Website Genius had reported in June 2019, that five tracks from the same album leaked on the Internet as they appeared on Carti’s official Apple Music account. This came after an unofficial upload of the highly popular leaked track, ‘Kid Cudi/Pissy Pamper’ made its way to number one spot on Spotify’s US Viral 50 chart, pulling over 2 million streams under the name ‘Kid Carti.’ Speaking on the leak, ‘Pissy Pamper’ producer Pi’erre Bourne had told Genius, “It only leaked when Carti got on it. They were telling me they were going to send it over. So I was like, ‘Alright, let me touch up the beat, make it longer or whatever.’ They’re like, ‘No, we already sent it.’ I was like, ‘S**t’s going to leak.’ ‘Cause this was around the time… he had hella leaks just coming out.”
