The movie starts with Anne talking about breaking up with long-time lover Wentworth. The next scene takes place in Kellynch Hall, where she introduces her family to the audience - her dad Sir Walter, her eldest sister Elizabeth, and her youngest sister Mary. Right when she's introducing, people come barging in and start taking things from the house as her dad has not paid his debts. The family is now trying to figure out where all the money went and how to pay back the debts.

Meanwhile, Anne is trying to cope with her mother's death by trying to confide in her mother's best friend. After realizing her ex-lover has not written to her in a while, she starts going through her newspaper cutouts of Wentworth in the Navy. The family now embarks on a journey to one of their distant relatives, while Anne is sent to Mary's to look after her ailing health. As soon as she lands there she talks about her sister being an absolute sweetheart of a narcissist. While Mary's sisters-in-laws are best friends with Anne and come galloping in to welcome her, Mary's husband walks in and tells them Fredrick Wentworth and his family will be coming for dinner. Mary's son falls off while playing and so Anne has to stay back to take care of him and cannot attend the dinner with the rest of them.

The next day while Anne is trying to make Wentworth's impressions at the breakfast table, he walks in and they meet each other. The same night the whole family has a gala dinner at their farmhouse and Anne sees that Louisa, one of Mary's sisters-in-law, is flirting with Wentworth. This annoys her a little. The whole family plans a trip to Lyme, where Wentworth and Louisa get close. Meanwhile, Wentworth tries to set Anne up with one of his friends. But before long when the crew is making their way to the beach, Anne bumps into a handsome man and Wentworth sees a spark between them that makes him jealous. He then approaches Anne to talk to her and they agree to be friends.

The next day Anne finds out the man she had bumped into was none other than William Walter Elliot. The following day the family heads to visit the fort where Louisa gets playful and takes a fall enduring a concussion. Anne helps Wentworth in trying to figure out how to handle the situation and help Louisa. Anne is now on her way to Bath secretly hoping to meet William Elliot. Sparks fly as Anne and William talk to each other. They get close over the time of their stay. Just then Anne learns about Wentworth and Louisa's engagement. This breaks her. The scene shifts to the bakery where Anne bumps into Wentworth and she tells him about William. William walks in just then and invites Wentworth to a concert that night. During the concert, Anne and Wentworth are unsuccessful in their little conversations as William keeps interrupting them. William then finally asks Anne for her hand in marriage.
