'Persuasion' on Netflix: Fans slam usage of millennial slangs in period drama
Netflix recently released a movie based on Jane Austen's book, 'Persuasion'. The novel was well-received in the early 19th century, but its greater fame came later in the century and continued into the 20th and 21st centuries. And so the movie adaptation of it has got some stellar feedback with a few not-so-positive ones.

A certain section of fans said the movie, although set in the mid-1800s, was not portrayed as a period drama. While the fans were impressed with the costumes, actors, and set, they had issues with the dialogues.
"You could not convince me this is a period drama movie let alone a JANE AUSTEN adaptation with this dialogue…", a fan said on Twitter. Another person stated, "I didn't think it was possible to take a novel as fine as Jane Austen's Persuasion & butcher it to this extent. The sets are beautiful, the actors interesting but my goodness, what a travesty. The script is appalling. I can tolerate modernization, but did it have to be so stupid?"

As per the reports, the movie has a couple of dialogues that don't seem to fit in a period drama. Sentences such as, "He is a ten", "Daddy's broke, princess" and "We're exes" brought forth the concerns of sounding very 21st century. "I think the worst part of #Persuasion is probably that the writers tried to write this adaptation similar to the latest Emma adaptation - quirky, upbeat, breaking the 4th wall. It just doesn't work because Persuasion is a completely different book in tone. Anne is different." a fan said on Twitter.

However, even though the movie is receiving some flak over its millennial way of dialogue delivery, many continue to praise it. One movie watcher said, "Don't let snobby purists dissuade you, #Persuasion on Netflix was really enjoyable. A fantastic cast and the perfect song at the end. Absolutely beautiful and I will definitely watch it again. I hate how I constantly underestimate Dakota Johnson."
