'Pearson' episode 10 review: Gina Torres' Jessica ends season 1 on a solid note but the finale needs some tidying up
This episode contains spoilers for 'Pearson' episode 10: 'The Fixer'
Season 1 of 'Pearson' drew to a close on Wednesday and it may probably be the last time we may see the character. USA Network hasn't announced a season 2 yet and should it end with season 1, there are enough plot points that will be left unanswered.
To start off, Nick D'Amato (Simon Kassianides) goes to Keri Allen (Bethany Joy Lenz) to confess killing Tommy Diehl. Keri asks Jessica to help out as going to the cops would also mean destroying Bobby's life and career (Morgan Spector). Jessica takes Nick to her home instead and when she hears of his confession in detail, she realizes that not everything that Nick says is true. For instance, his explanation of disposing of Tommy's body doesn't add up.
Meanwhile, Jeff (D.B. Malone) returns to Chicago only to find out Jessica's being investigated by the FBI. However, she still cannot tell him about the ongoings as they don't have the marital privilege. He urges her to cooperate only for her to refuse. The discussion ends there and it may also signify a breakup between the two. Jessica then shreds the FBI files Jeff took and arranges for a meeting with Bobby, and realizes that he isn't surprised to hear Nick killed Tommy because in reality, Bobby was the actual murderer and Nick took the fall for it. She agrees to "fix" the problem, except, she's no more his errand girl.
While this pretty much sums up the finale, there are still enough threads that need to be tied up
Will Jessica's cousin Angela Cooke become the Alderman?
Last we saw, Angela (Chantel Riley) had managed to create a rally in the courtroom for the housing project and that impressed Jessica. She felt Novak could use a woman as sharp and gutsy as Angela. However, we don't have any clue if Angela has actually agreed to take the position.
What of Derrick and Yoli's relationship?
Yoli (Isabella Arraiza) brushes off that romantic moment with Derrica Mayes (Eli Goree) as a one-off. The kiss is nothing more than a peck on the cheek and unless there is a season 2, it's hard to know if they will get together.
Bobby's divorced?
Despite the infidelity, Stephanie (Betsy Brandt) still hasn't signed the divorce papers. She relives a moment about Bobby who was the man she always loved and she'd want the same man again. However, we don't see Bobby signing the papers, so we don't know if he's up for the divorce.
That said, 'The Fixer' is still worth the watch if you wanted to know if things pan out for Jessica. Gina Torres has been a powerhouse throughout the series and honestly, there could have been a better ending. Lenz as Keri has essayed her role to perfection and so has Kassianides as a troubled Nick. The cast has been simply phenomenal, but did the wafer-thin plot let them down?
'Pearson' may not have been up to the level as 'Suits'. The spin-off was ambitious and promised a solid plot. By the end of season 1, it is evident that 'Pearson' has all the necessary ingredients for a show that could go a long way with the audience. The final episode feels like 'Pearson' is finally in a place where it can start off and gain traction going forward. But, will it?
What are your thoughts on 'Pearson'season 1? Do we need a new season?
