'Peaky Blinders' season 5 episode 2 preview: Michael Gray's homecoming with Gina might be a bitter pill to swallow
After a two-year-long wait, 'Peaky Blinders' makes a swashbuckling comeback with a bodacious first episode. With outrageously dangerous twists and turns, Thomas Shelby (Cillian Murphy) shows his dark side even after being elected as the Labour MP of Birmingham South. If the first episode 'Black Tuesday' was irresistible, the second one seems to be another top-notch attempt with a title like 'Black Cats'.
Well, there were several loose ends in episode one and the biggest one seems to be Michael Gray's (Finn Cole) homecoming. He has messed up—big time—and might have to face Tommy's wrath if he goes back to Birmingham. The first episode begins with the financial crash of 1929. "The Wall Street Stock Exchange crashed like a steam train and we were most definitely on board," Arthur (Paul Anderson) tells Tommy. It's clear that until then that Michael, who is running the American end of the family business, hasn't a clue about it.
In Detroit USA, the scene pans as there are bottles of alcohol everywhere. Michael lies bare-chested on a couch while an American girl is sloshed on the carpet. You get the picture: He doesn't care about a f**king thing in the world and that's how he seems to have screwed up the business.
A sudden call wakes him up and he realises the stock market has crashed. Moreover, his lady love Gina (Anya Taylor-Joy) wants to meet his family. "No, you don't," he retorts back at her. But, it seems she has made up her mind. It's quite clear that his mother Polly Gray (Helen McCrory) will not be happy and accepting an American in the Birmingham family will be a hard pill to swallow. Moreover, Tommy is clearly pissed with Michael. So, his return will be quite an unwelcoming one.
The official summary of the episode reads: "As the Peaky Blinders come under fire, Tommy is warned about a traitor in his midst."
In the first episode, Arthur receives a letter signed by the Angels of Retribution, who say they "don't even know" Peaky Blinders. But, who really are they?
Moreover, the bullet for Finn had a Chinese code. So, is there a traitor in the close-knit group? If yes, who will it be and what will the Shelby family's reaction be? Tommy doesn't reveal to his family who he actually is working for. Sadly, we will have to wait until the next episode to find out more about the paperwork and the mysterious man.
There's also politician Oswald Mosley's (Sam Claflin) eerie introduction that is supposed to be a bigger threat for the Labour MP. So, hold your horses! There's much to unravel. The second episode is all set to premiere on BBC One at 9.30 p.m. EST on Monday.
