Samantha Fluentes: Parkland shooting survivor reveals shrapnel still lodged in her face 4 years after attack
FORT LAUDERDALE, FLORIDA: It was the second day of the Parkland school shooting penalty trial on Tuesday, July 19, that saw a line of witnesses sharing their experiences during the 2018 mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School by Nikolas Cruz. As per reports, among the witnesses were two teachers and ten students, all present on the day of the attack. One of them was Samantha Fuentes, who narrated to the jury that she still has pain from the injuries she suffered during the shooting four years ago while saying, “I have shrapnel still lodged in all of these parts of my body."
Samantha, who is currently managing symptoms of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, spoke in detail about the Parkland school shooting that left 17 dead. She said to the jury that while the gunman was shooting, her vision and hearing "went away briefly” which made her "very confused and disoriented." She described during the penalty trial that as she was checking the pulses of her two dead classmates, Samantha realized she had been shot herself. She said she had a gunshot wound above her left knee and "multiple other locations of shrapnel" that hit her legs, arm and face. "I also still have shrapnel just behind my right eye. That still is there. And I have shrapnel still lodged in all of these parts of my body," she said.

In a conversation with The Gannon Knight, Samantha said, "I grew up with a lot of historical changes as a kid,” she said. “I was raised by a single parent below the poverty line, and you’re kind of molded to not have a particularly fond relationship between yourself and the democracy of the country when you experience those things. I didn’t see myself playing a major role in that, as someone who was much younger.”
