If you are one of those who believe that The Kardashians were the first celebrities to break the internet, then you are absolutely WRONG. During the 1990s, the world was introduced to the Internet and the rest is history. But it still took a lot of time for people to join the movement that took the world by storm.

However, in 1995, something happened that changed the Internet forever and the world got to know about the “wrong kind” of viral content. If you are a fan of pop culture, then you must have heard about Pamela Anderson and Tommy Lee’s infamous sex tape. The video was filmed when the couple was on their honeymoon in Las Vegas in 1995.

Pamela Anderson fans threaten to boycott Hulu show on her sex tape with Tommy Lee

It was a crazy time for both as Pamela became the biggest and hottest star on TV due to ‘Baywatch’. Meanwhile, Lee was achieving greater heights with his band Motley Crue. But they didn’t know that their lives were about to be changed forever. The sex tape that they made during their honeymoon was mysteriously gone from the house and ended up being on the INTERNET. Even though there were not many users on the worldwide web at that time, the leaked video started the trend of “viral content”.

The sex tape is now the inspiration behind Hulu’s latest series ‘Pam & Tommy’, which explores the relationship and the scandal that came from the leak. Sebastian Stan plays Tommy Lee while Lily James portrays Pamela Anderson.

But who stole the sex tape? And why did he do it? Let’s dig a little deeper and get to know about the person.

Who is Rand Gauthier? The man who broke the internet with the sex tape

Although people say that Pamela and Tommy broke the internet, it was Rand who actually broke everything by stealing the video from the couple’s house. In an interview with Rolling Stone in 2014, Gauthier said that he was responsible for the leak and he stole the video from the couple’s Malibu mansion.

During the interview, Gauthier also revealed why he made the sex tape public. According to Gauthier, the couple fired many laborers from their property for doing shoddy work. Gauthier was working as an electrician at that time and was caught up in a payment dispute. In the interview, he revealed that he was really fed up with their demands and was willing to write off the $20,000 that the couple owed him.

However, things didn’t go as per the expectations. One fine day, Tommy Lee pointed a shotgun at Gauthier and a general contractor who had come to the mansion to collect their tools. While speaking to Rolling Stone, Gauthier said that after pointing a gun at them, Lee said, “Get the f**k off my property.” The outlet also suggested that the incident made Gauthier really angry and he wanted to get revenge.

So, he made the plan of stealing the large safe that the couple had in their garage which had all of Lee’s guns and Anderson’s jewelry. As per Gauthier, he spent the entire summer of 1995 in the preparations of the heist. He also revealed that he planned on completing the heist by wearing a white Tibetan yak rug on his back and reaching the garage on his hands and knees so that security cameras would only show a dog approaching the garage.

He was successful in taking the safe with him, but he didn’t know that it had the videotape as well. As soon as he got to know about the tape, he leaked it online with the help of his contacts in the adult film industry.

In the same interview, he also shared that he had a troubled childhood and never had a good relationship with his parents. When he was younger, he also dated a woman who was an actor in adult films. He also appeared in several adult films but didn’t like the job so he decided to leave the industry and became an electrician.

Where is Rand Gauthier now? And who plays him on ‘Pam & Tommy’?

Gauthier has made a career in renovating houses and doing electrical works. According to his website, he is the owner of Q Electrical Services and also loves restoring sports cars and motorcycles.

Seth Rogen will be playing Rand Gauthier on the show.

‘Pam & Tommy’ will be premiering exclusively on Hulu on Wednesday, February 2.
