On Sunday night, November 29, an incident that took place in a Dallas restaurant is still being talked about. In a viral video shot at True Kitchen + Kocktails, owner Kevin Kelley is seen addressing the guests at his restaurant. He can be heard saying, “I invested a lot of money into buying this building and developing this concept so Black people can have somewhere nice to go to.” He asked the DJ to stop the music and continued, “All this twerking shit, don’t bring it here because we’re a restaurant.” Kelley also said, “If you wanna do it, get the fuck out my restaurant. Don’t do it again. I don’t want to hear it if you don’t like it, get out because I don’t need your money.”

The Dallas Morning News reported that the restaurant, in a Facebook post, tried to explain its point of view, and it was written by Kelley. The statement read: “While I would like to apologize to the patrons who I offended by my poor choice of wording, I think this full story and a bit of video may help your understanding of the final straw with guests addressed and asked to leave.” The statement says that the guests were requested politely and they even released three additional videos. It further read, “After already addressing this behavior twice, these customers no longer deserved the courtesy of kindness I expressed in the earlier encounters as it was met with disrespect and intentionally ignored. This is why they were told to leave.”

It was further stated, “We hope these additional videos will give you a bit more insight into what led to the guests being admonished but we understand we cannot please everyone. As usual, 97% of our guests yesterday were fantastic, this is an indictment on the very few who don’t respect our restaurant. However, we reserve the right to address guests who we believe fall below the standards of the concept created.” The statement added, “As for the music played, moving forward we will adjust our playlist and DJ selections. However, regardless of what had or will be played, no guest had the right to come into our business 'home' and stand on our furniture because of any song played. As for the twerking being a part of our culture, we do not welcome the part of the culture that will come into a restaurant, stand on furniture and twerk while using 'culture' as an excuse.”

Customer Trice Jones and her sister had been in the restaurant for about an hour at the time of the incident, she told The Dallas Morning News. According to her, the music played a part, and Lil Ronny’s song, ‘Throw Dat Ass in a Circle’, was played around the time of the incident. Jones said, “They were playing club music.” When the news organization contacted Kelley, he said, “The fact that we have music at our restaurant doesn’t mean that you can stand on our seats, lean on glass, and twerk.”

Even though Kelley regrets using profanity, he said, “But if that’s the only thing people are caught up on, they should consider the behavior of the guests in the first place. We’ve created a restaurant that’s here to serve the community. We created 70-plus jobs during a pandemic. Ninety-nine percent of our guests are fantastic and we love them. We are not going to have their experience ruined because we have a few guests who want to stand on furniture and twerk. We’re not the restaurant for that.”

As for the reactions to the video, he said, “We understand that we can’t be the restaurant for everyone. But there are now thousands of people across the country who understand the importance of the Black community having a good concept that they can go eat at. Those who are upset about the actions that we took should look in the mirror and ask themselves if they would want guests to act like that in their restaurant.”

The video of the incident was posted by a user named DJ Green Villain, who captioned it, “Restaurant SUICIDE on camera.” There were other reactions to the incident as well. One user said, “For all you people who want to 'support the stance' of True Kitchen’s owner on how he wants a classy environment. Just head over to the IG page to see what they’re actually promoting cause it’s clear what type of establishment it is. Ain’t this twerking??”

Another said, “Let me know the next time y’all twerking at True Kitchen so when he say y’all can leave I get up and go without paying cause them people missed a blessing.” One opined, “I think y’all are missing the bigger picture here....... whether you agree with the owners point or not, you don’t speak to your customers that way, especially not cursing at them. You’d be foolish to spend another dollar at True Kitchen.” Another said, “I don’t feel like the owner of True Kitchen was wrong. Yall love to holler something 'For us By us' but on your own terms. You wouldn’t go shake ya ass and stand on people furniture at Ruth Chris or Red Lobster so why do it at his restaurant?”
