Oregon woman, 42, who struck and killed cyclist with her pickup truck had dog's Xanax in her blood
An Oregon woman who struck and killed a cyclist in December 2017 had 11 medications in her system at the time of the accident, including Xanax that was prescribed to her dog, show court records filed on January 28 by the Deschutes County District Attorney's Office.
According to The Bend Bulletin, the accident happened when 42-year-old Shantel Lynn Witt was driving her 2002 GMC Sierra pickup east of Bend at around 3:15 pm on December 30, 2017. Her victim, dentist and cyclist Marika Stone, was riding single-file behind fellow cyclists Carrie Carney and Bruce Rogers when they encountered Witt coming from the opposite direction in her pickup.
Four miles east of US Highway 20, when Witt crossed the double-yellow center line into the oncoming lane, Carney and Rogers managed to avoid the pickup, but Stone was hit and killed on the spot. Witt was subsequently arrested, and a blood test revealed that her system had anti-anxiety drug Xanax, as well as muscle relaxer Soma and meprobamate.
