LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: 'Only Murders in the Building' has been an instant hit ever since its debut in 2021. Three seasons in, with another one on its way, it continues to woo us with its delightful blend of comedy and crime.

Among many reasons, the Selena Gomez starrer show has been our favorite because it cleverly addresses a challenge that many serious true-crime series overlook. The show acknowledges that in real life it is difficult for cops to reopen a case once it is closed.

How 'Only Murders in the Building' got the details right since Season 1

Season 1 of 'Only Murders in the Building' revolved around the murder case of Tim Kono, a financial advisor. His death was ruled out as a suicide without proper investigation.

However, his neighbors Charles-Haden Savage (played by Steve Martin), Oliver Putnam (Martin Short), and Mabel Mora (Selena Gomez) suspected foul play. They overheard a suspicious phone conversation just before Kono's death and decided to investigate, launching a podcast to document their findings.

Halfway through the season, Detective Williams (Da’Vine Joy Randolph) took centre stage. The no-nonsense cop wasn't earlier amused by the work of the podcasters, believing it complicated her work.

She only considered the conspiracy theory when her wife, who listened to the podcast, mentioned a detail that suggested Tim Kono was murdered. This led Detective Williams to revisit the case files and make startling discoveries and inconsistencies.

The revelation puts Detective Williams in a tough spot, highlighting a critical aspect of real-life police work.

Large city police departments are bureaucratic, and detectives juggle multiple cases at once. There's too much red tape involved to re-open a closed case and emerge as a hero, unlike shown in movies and TV shows.

It was actually refreshing to see how 'Only Murders in the Building' kept things realistic while being comedic in nature.

Even in Season 2 and 3, the attention to detail has been one of the key characteristics that contributes to the popularity of the show. As it gears up for another season, we hope that it retains its charm.
