'NOS4A2' canceled after Season 2 confirms showrunner, here's why fans are 'kinda glad' the show is not renewed

Showrunner Jami O’Brien said, "Well friends, I heard from AMC last week. We won’t be making a 3rd season of #NOS4A2. It’s a bummer, but I’m grateful we were at least able to finish adapting the storyline from Joe Hill’s terrific novel"

AMC’s ‘NOS4A2’ has been canceled after two seasons. The news comes just over a week after the season 2 finale, which aired on AMC on August 23. The second season consisted of 10 episodes and began airing on June 21.

Series showrunner Jami O’Brien shared the news on Twitter on Monday, August 31. O’Brien wrote, “Well friends, I heard from AMC last week. We won’t be making a 3rd season of #NOS4A2. It’s a bummer, but I’m grateful we were at least able to finish adapting the storyline from Joe Hill’s terrific novel.”

He added, “Congratulations to every single member of our phenomenal team on two seasons of weird and wonderful TV. I will miss seeing everyone back in Little Rhody this year, but I’m awfully proud of all we’ve done together.”

O’Brien further wrote, “Thank you to @joe_hill for all your generosity, imagination, and support, and for trusting us with Vic and Charlie, Maggie, Bing, Linda, Chris, Lou, Tabitha, Wayne, Millie, and all your flawed, complicated, and beautiful characters.”

“And thank you from the bottom of my heart to everyone who tuned in -- especially to those who tweeted along with us each week -- you made Sunday nights a lot of fun. Hope to do it again with you all somewhere down the road... xoxoxo,” he concluded.

Based on Joe Hill's best-selling novel, ‘NOS4A2’ follows Victoria ‘Vic’ McQueen (Ashleigh Cummings), a young working-class artist who discovers that she has a supernatural ability to track the seemingly immortal Charlie Manx (Zachary Quinto). Manx feeds off the souls of children, then deposits what remains of them into Christmasland, a twisted Christmas Village of Manx's imagination where every day is Christmas Day and unhappiness is against the law. Vic must strive to defeat Manx and rescue his victims. Without losing her mind or falling victim to him herself.

“Christmasland may live forever, but ‘NOS4A2’ will come to an end with the conclusion of season 2,” AMC said in a statement. “We are so thankful to Jami O’Brien, Joe Hill, and the entire cast and crew for two seasons of inspired, terrifying, and thoroughly captivating and age-defying television. And thanks to the fans for climbing into the Wraith and coming along for the ride.”

The announcement of the cancellation of ‘NOS4A2’ was met with heartbreak from fans on social media. But while sad, many fans felt that if the show had to come to an abrupt end, it still ended at a good place. “This is so sad but @NOS4A2 went out on a high note last weekend and I loved the way it ended,” wrote a fan.

Another wrote, “I'm kinda glad that NOS4A2 didn't get renewed for season 3 because the story of 'NOS4A2' revolved around Vic and Charlie. Their story is done. But I do hope, and beg, that we get a spin-off. With all my heart I hope we get more in another form.”

Another fan wrote, “AMC confirmed NOS4A2 has been canceled after two seasons. Sounds like AMC should be put on the naughty list. I’m glad they were able to wrap everything up with a nice Christmas bow before cancelation.”

“I am sad that #nos4a2 isn't returning, but I really enjoyed the two seasons we got. Maybe it's better the show doesn't get a chance to fizzle out,” wrote another fan.

The series also starred Jahkara Smith, Olafur Darri Olafsson, Virginia Kull, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach, and was executive produced by Hill, O’Brien, and Lauren Corrao.

Earlier this month, Hill revealed plans for a novel prequel story centered on Margaret 'Maggie' Leigh (Jahkara J. Smith). "Before there was ever a TV show, I planned to tell another story about Maggie Leigh called 'The Crooked Alley,' which takes place before the events in NOS4A2. It would be interesting to write now because my view of the character has been radically changed by Jahkara Smith," Hill told ComicBook.com. "I so love Jahkara's performance as Maggie that I feel like it's more interesting than the version in the book."
