LEWISTON, MAINE: Tragedy struck as 22 people were killed and dozens injured in a mass shooting in Lewiston, Maine, on Wednesday, October 25. According to NBC News, police named Robert Card, 40, as a person of interest in connection with the shootings at Schemengees Bar and Sparetime Recreation.

Gavin Newsom addresses the Maine mass shooting

California Governor Gavin Newsom took to X (formerly Twitter) to address the tragic Maine mass shooting and wrote, "Republicans in Maine rejected a bill this year that would have required a waiting period for firearm purchases."

He continued, "They seriously could not fathom waiting 72 hours to buy a gun."

"Maine also does not… - Ban assault weapons - Require permits to carry a gun in public - Require background checks on all gun sales," added Newsom about the state's gun laws.

The California Governor concluded, "Our hearts are heavy tonight. We need immediate action — we cannot sit around and wait for Congress. We need to amend the Constitution to help prevent tragedies like this."

Internet reacts to Gavin Newsom’s statement on Maine mass shooting

As Gavin Newsom responded to the mass shooting in Maine and shared a report by MSNBC on X (formerly Twitter), the Internet was quick to respond with their views.

One said, "Yet mass shootings happen all the time in your state of California that has strict gun laws. You people love to politicize everything. You’re a vile person, I’m shocked at all though."

Another expressed, "Just couldn’t wait for the bodies to get cold?"

"Here comes Gavin politicizing a tragedy while the bodies are still warm," wrote a person.

A netizen stated, "I can't believe the citizens of California aren't able to see through your facade. You have no shame."

One disgruntled person wrote, "The bodies aren’t even cold you craven political monster."
