PHILADELPHIA: Philadelphia saw a wave of gun violence just hours after the New Year's celebrations, which left at least nine people shot, including one teen, according to police. Reports say that within an hour of midnight, a domestic disagreement in the city's Frankford district turned violent, leading to the first shooting to be officially reported in 2023. 

A 30-year-old male was shot in the left leg and side in East Frankford at 1 am on Sunday, January 1, according to police. It took place close to Torresdale Avenue on Tackawanna Street. According to the authorities, the man was transported to Temple Hospital, where he underwent surgery and was in a steady state, as reported by CBS. Later, officials claimed that the woman had shot the individual in self-defense while being assaulted by him. Additionally, they mention that the woman was licensed to carry.

As reported by Fox News, police have stated that the man who was shot in his left leg is a suspect. They further informed that they had recovered the firearm used in the shooting.

Woman, 87, injured in shooting

More bullets were fired as the night wore on and the morning hours approached. An 87-year-old woman was one of at least five victims who were injured in gun violence. She suffered a wound to the left shoulder in Port Richmond, the police stated. The incident took place at 12.15 am on Sunday in the 3400 block of Salmon Street. She was sent to Jefferson Frankford Hospital and is in stable condition. In this instance, no one has been taken into custody. 

Teen, 19, wounded in the neck

Police were called to Mercy Hospital at around 1.45 am as a 19-year-old boy had been shot in the neck in the 5600 block of Walnut Street in West Philadelphia. He was taken to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, where he was in stable condition.

26-year-old male was shot in the neck

A 26-year-old male was shot in the neck only a few minutes after 2 am at Strawberry Mansion, according to police. He was brought to Temple University Hospital. He was said to be in critical condition in the hospital. According to police, they are still looking into the incident that occurred in the 3300 block of Ridge Avenue and have identified a suspect.

Police responded to double shooting

The police were called to the 1900 block of North 3rd Street shortly after 2.30 am due to a double shooting. Two victims, aged 15 and 18, with gunshot wounds. They were sent to a nearby hospital and were said to be in stable condition.

24-year-old man was shot in left forearm

Authorities said that a 24-year-old man was shot in the left forearm just before 4 am in Philadelphia's Fairhill neighborhood. The victim was taken to Temple University Hospital in stable condition by police after they arrived on the 2800 block of North Lawrence Street. No one has been detained in relation to the incident.

38-year-old male sustains graze wounds to his head

Authorities said a 38-year-old male arrived at Temple Hospital shortly after 4.30 am with graze wounds to his head. The investigators were able to identify a home in North Philadelphia's 2500 block of Ridge Drive as the scene of the incident. The shooting's inquiry is underway and the man is now in stable condition.

34-year-old man sustains gunshot wounds to left thigh

Around 5 am, Philadelphia police received a report of a nocturnal gun incident. A 34-year-old man with gunshot wounds to the left thigh arrived at Temple Hospital. According to authorities, the incident took place on the 4100 block of North Broad Street in the Nicetown neighborhood of Philadelphia. The victim was said to be in stable condition, and cops are still looking into the shooting.

Only one arrest has been made in relation to the eight gunshots overnight. Each shooting is still being looked into. The number of homicides in Philadelphia in 2022 reached 500 in December. Although when compared to the previous year when 562 people died, this represents a decrease. There were more than 1,770 nonfatal shootings citywide in 2022 as a result of the gun violence crisis.
