Australian police are reportedly pressing assault charges against tennis player Nick Kyrgios as he gets ready for his Wimbledon quarter-final against Cristian Garin. It has been alleged that the 27-year-old assaulted his former girlfriend Chiara Passari in December last year after he grabbed her in Canberra. They had reportedly been together from July 2020 to October 2021. He is expected to appear in court in August.

On Tuesday, July 4, police reportedly said: “ACT Policing can confirm a 27-year-old Watson man is scheduled to face the ACT Magistrates Court on the 2nd of August in relation to one charge of common assault following an incident in December 2021.” Kyrgios could face up to two years behind bars if found guilty.

His lawyer Jason Moffett, from Key Chambers, has also confirmed the news and said, “The nature of the allegation is serious, and Mr Kyrgios takes the allegation very seriously. Given the matter is before the court... he doesn't have a comment at this stage, but in the fullness of time we'll issue a media release.”

Kyrgios, who is currently dating 21-year-old Costeen Hatzi, has consistently made headlines for all the wrong reasons. According to express.co.uk, he disrespected competition rules as soon as entering Centre Court. Despite knowing the rules that the players “must be dressed in suitable tennis attire that is almost entirely white and this applies from the point at which the player enters the court surround,” Kyrgios “walked down the famous stairs from the locker room and out onto the hallowed turf wearing a bright red pair of trainers,” the report noted.

Meanwhile, the most recent accusation against Kyrgios has grabbed a lot of eyeballs on the internet. A user tweeted, “Of a piece with his general behavior. Not surprising. Should be instantly suspended. #Wimbledon or not.” The second user shared: “Big difference between this & Zverev is that Kyrgios’s ex girlfriend went to the police to report the alleged incident, rather than air it on Instagram and tell her story to a trashy, tabloid style journalist like Rothenburg.” “Any publicity is good publicity, as somebody recently remarked…” the third user noted.

One of Kyrgios' supporters claimed, “Very convenient timing ahead of potential semifinal clash with Nadal. I was wondering what they would come up with to get him out of the way so Rafa doesn’t have to face a top player till the final.” A person remarked, “In the Australian system it is not usual for such information to be made public prior to a court appearance/arrest…and certainly not with the party named or somehow identified. ‘27 year old Watson man’ is entitled to privacy just like everyone else. Someone has leaked it.”

“□ wonder what Netflex crew be pondering once this plays out? believe a documentary is in the mix with Kyrgios & Tsitsipas  😒,” a tweet read. “Well well well. Whilst the court process is yet to play out, my goodness the timing of this news coming out is highly coincidental isn’t it,” another tweet speculated. Meanwhile, someone asked: “Is he really facing charges because he ‘grabbed’ her or is that just one of the details?”
