NHS failed to help suicidal single mom who took her own life after struggling to take care of wheelchair-bound autistic daughter
The heartbreaking story of Jane Kavanagh, who killed herself the day after phoning her GP to say she was feeling suicidal, brings the credibility of the NHS into question
A single mother who was struggling to care for her wheelchair-bound autistic daughter killed herself after she did not receive any support from her local council, according to an inquest.
Thirty three-year-old Jane Kavanagh was engaged 24x7 in caring for her daughter, 15, who also suffered from cerebral ataxia, a degenerative condition which affects muscle coordination, Daily Mail reports.
However, Kavanagh had no care workers assigned to her neither had any adaptations made to her house despite living on her own with her two children. Local authority officials in Rochdale, Greater Manchester, deemed the house "inadequate" for the child, forcing her to move to another property - described as "appalling" by bereft family members.
