Quinnen Williams focuses on NFL future to help New York Jets bag first win against the Colts
The New York Jets have not got their 2020 NFL season off to a great start. They lost their opener against the Buffalo Bills and the San Francisco 49ers got the better of them in their second game in Week 2. However, there were a few positives and one of them was defensive tackle, Quinnen Williams.
Williams was the number three overall pick of the 2019 NFL draft and he signed a four-year deal with the Jets for $32.5 million and his rookie season ended with 28 tackles, 2.5 sacks, and one fumble recovery in his 13 games. Something he says he is keen to get better on. According to the New York Post, the Williams of 2020 came in "looking different" as he's packed in the muscle and was much-fitter looking than he was last year.
It has been a mixed year off the field for the 22-year-old. Legal trouble followed him in March this year when he was for trying to board a flight with a gun. However, soon after he earned the respect of fans when he donated healthy meals to medical professionals during the pandemic. And now, his focus is on trying to get better using last year's season as a stepping stone.
"I can tell the difference," Williams said, according to the site on Friday. "Just experience. I had a whole season last year learning the same exact plays. I just feel comfortable in the playbook, just comfortable in the position I’m playing." Despite the loss to the 49ers, Williams has had a good run as he produced two sacks, two tackles, four solo tackles, and a fumble. The performance was already of a sign of getting better than his previous season.
"I want to be better. I want to win. So anything that I can do to help the team, anything I did wrong in that last game, I want to get corrected so I don’t do it wrong again,” he added. "I’m not really focused on how I played last week or what I did. I’m just focused on being consistent every week and trying to get a win."
His attitude towards the game was distinctly felt even to defensive coordinator Gregg Williams. "One of the first things that come out of his mouth is I could have played better and that is even more impressive to me," said Gregg. The Jets take on the Indianapolis Colts next, who pride themselves on being a sold offensive side. And Williams will be keen on replicating the performance just like he did against the 49ers while the Jets search for their first win.
