New Yorkers were in for an unpleasant surprise after a car crashed through the lobby doors at the Trump Plaza in the NY’s Westchester County, on Tuesday night. One person was reportedly inside the vehicle and it was not known immediately whether he was injured. One person, who was in the lobby, suffered injuries that were not life-threatening. Another report said two pedestrians were slightly injured other than the driver.
The New Rochelle Police Department said this particular case appeared to be an accident. CBS New York reporter Tony Aiello posted videos from the accident scene showing damage and the clean-up. In the video that started doing brisk rounds on social media, a partly damaged black Mercedes-Benz was seen sitting inside the marble lobby of the 40-story luxury condo located on Huguenot Street, New Rochelle, about 16 miles from New York City.
Trump Plaza is owned by the Trump Organization and was opened in 2007. The building was developed by Louis Cappelli, chairman and chief executive of Cappelli Enterprises.
At the time of its opening, Trump, who was still to become the president, spoke in front of the building to cheering crowds calling the event a milestone in “the renaissance of New Rochelle”.
Onlookers say after the car plowed into the lobby, the driver got out and took a seat on a sofa, and said nothing.
"I think it's crazy, and I just think that it's a lucky thing there wasn’t anyone passing along the sidewalk at the moment," Andrea Aljoe, an onlooker, told NBC New York. Another man who was nearby told reporters that he heard “like a boom”.
The car was removed around 10 pm ET. Investigation is still on into the incident.
