'New Amsterdam' Season 3: Will Dr Helen Sharpe choose Max or Cassian? Fans won't get usual 'love triangle'

The show creators tell fans not to expect a typical love triangle. In fact, they aren't even sure if it can be called a love triangle

Dr Helen Sharpe certainly seems to have the problem of plenty when it comes to handsome, brilliant doctors trying to woo her. When Season 3 Episode 2 showed Dr Helen Sharpe 'choosing' Dr Cassian Shin (Daniel Dae Kim) over Max Goodwin (Ryan Eggold), the show creators were keen to share that this whole dynamic between Max, Helen and Cassian is not going to play out as just a straightforward love triangle, if there is such a thing.

When asked about how Max reacts to Cassian and Helen's relationship, executive producers on 'New Amsterdam' David Schulner with a laugh says, "Not well."

Peter Horton goes on to explain, "We definitely have a genuine attachment to Sharpe and Max. It’s been there from the beginning. But now we’ve got this other character [Shin] in the mix, who we also really like. He may be arrogant and edgy, but we love him. We get to play with all that this season, which is going to be fun."

The show creators, however, make it clear that this isn't a traditional love triangle at all. In fact, they aren't even sure if they would define it as a love triangle in the first place.

"We’ve never said it’s a love triangle, just to be clear — Max and Sharpe are best of friends. They’re each other’s confidants, go-to, and suddenly, Sharpe’s in a relationship, and she’s not as available to Max. Some things she may want to save for Cassian. It’s just changed the dynamic of their relationship, their friendship, and any potential that could go beyond that."

Some fans appreciate that 'New Amsterdam' isn't taking the cliched love triangle route, "I appreciate how #NewAmsterdam doesn't go the cliche route with it's storytelling. A lot of shows regress & adults start behaving like highschoolers with their relationships. This feels refreshingly mature and human. It's really nice  #ThankYouWriters."

Others feel it's an unwelcome addition to simply prolong the 'will they won't they' aspect of the Sharpwin romance. One fan tweeted, "Unexpected & undesirable turnaround. Now that nothing stands in their way, they're introducing a new character by making the relationship that Mas & Sharpe built 4 2 seasons completely meaningless. Even their friendship is barely visible. Max role is increasingly less interesting."

To find out more about how this love triangle shapes up, you can catch new episodes of 'New Amsterdam' on Tuesdays 10/9c on @NBC. The episode streams the next day on @PeacockTV.
