Netflix's 'Tigertail': Alan Yang's moving immigrant drama leaves fans 'enlightened' and 'emotionally destroyed'
Spoilers for Netflix's 'Tigertail'
Directed by Alan Yang, Netflix's 'Tigertail' is a beautifully shot tale spanning continents and decades, telling the story of immigration through Tzi Ma's (who plays an old Pin-Jui) life.
From 1950s Taiwan to present-day New York City, the movie puts on display the struggles of those who leave the land they know behind for better opportunities.
The movie that dropped earlier today has viewers overwhelmed with its surreal, poignant story. "I finished 'Tigertail' and I am sad enlightened but sad and now I'm thinkin bout tons of thingsssss," tweeted a fan. "Tigertail has me thinking about way too much life things. watch it & be sad with me," wrote another. "TIGERTAIL. That was a film. Have to to go to sleep but there will be some sad dreams tonight," added another.
As Tzi Ma's Pin-Jui reflects on his past — of the love he left back at home, his mother, and all the things that could be — it had viewers of the movie emotionally invested in his journey. "Tzi Ma from TigerTail just emotionally destroyed me. Too good," noted a fan.
Returning to America after his mother's funeral, his story is told through flashbacks to his past — memories he has locked away in his heart. Shot through Yang's earnest lenses, the movie definitely belongs to an indie circuit. "Tigertail is an excellent movie made by Alan Yang (he created Master of None). It is beautiful, meaningful and not a standard 'American Movie'," noted a fan.
Tugging at viewers' hearts, 'Tigertail' tells the universal yet deeply personal tale of immigration and families broken apart by the struggle of attaining a better life. "Just finished Tigertail on Netflix. Oh my feels. My heart. The movie made me miss Taiwan and my grandma so much. :( " tweeted a fan.
Alan Yang had impressed his fans with 'Parks and Recreation' and 'Master of None'. But with 'Tigertail', the writer and director has deeply moved viewers. "Hi @alanyang, I have been counting down the days until Tigertail. I stayed up until 3 am EST so I could watch it as soon as it came out. It’s 4:43 am and I am still in pieces...PIECES!! It’s too late (early?) to be feeling this much!! Thank you???"
'Tigertail' is currently streaming on Netflix. But it mustn't be confused with the docuseries 'Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem and Madness'.
"Man so like a week ago, i knew everyone was losing their minds over some tiger thing on netflix, and then someone shared a link to the trailer of the netflix movie, tigertail. i had never been more confused, like i know i follow a lot of asians but that seemed excessive," tweeted a fan.
