'Secret Obsession' preview: Netflix's Brenda Song thriller plays out like a warning for all women

Premiering on Netflix on July 18, 2019, 'Secret Obsession' tells the story of a newly married woman trying to piece together her life after a brutal attack at a rest stop.

We have had just about enough with Netflix's mushy romantic movies. So when we saw the trailer for Brenda Song's upcoming movie 'Secret Obsession', it had us excited, to say the least.

A thriller directed by Peter Sullivan, 'Secret Obsession' follows newlywed Jennifer (played by Brenda Song, of 'The Suite Life of Zack & Cody' fame) after she was brutally attacked at a dark rest stop. While healing from her injuries at the hospital, she realizes she can’t recall anything from her past, including the ordeal. But there is someone patiently waiting for her to regain consciousness.

Jennifer's husband, Russell (played by Mike Vogel, of 'The Help', 'Cloverfield, and 'She’s Out of My League' fame), is just thankful she’s alive and is eager to get his wife back home. He takes her to their secluded mountain estate and things are going just fine as Song's Jennifer has only one agenda on her mind at the moment – to rebuild her life and piece as many pieces together as she possibly can.

But this is not all that is to the story. As Russell reintroduces her to their secluded mountain estate, Jennifer begins to realize that her husband may not be who he claims to be – there is a lot about him that Jennifer doesn't know.

At the same time, far far away from the Williams's secluded mountain estate, Detective Page (played by Dennis Haysbert, of 'Far From Heaven', '24' and 'Heat' fame) pursues Jennifer’s unknown assailant  spurred by the memories of his own daughter who had gone missing years ago and was never found. Does the same fate await Jennifer as well? It forces one to think if women are really safe in the confines of their own homes even with their loved ones around.

It looks like the one-hour thirty-seven-minutes-long Netflix original has let out a lot of information in the trailer – we already know that Mike Vogel's Russell has a shady backstory. So what does this mean for Song's character, Jennifer? Our guess is that Russell may have something to do with Jennifer's stalker and when things don't go according to his wishes and/ or expectations, they start going downhill for Jennifer. Another possibility is that Russell only happened to show his true colors after their marriage and Jennifer, who couldn't be possibly aware of his psychopathic tendencies beforehand, finds herself shackled. Anything is possible, really, after all, it is a Netflix movie.

The upcoming drama thriller is written by Kraig Wenman and Peter Sullivan, who is also the director of the film. Produced by Jeffrey Schenck and Barry Barnholtz, 'Secret Obsession' is scheduled to premiere on Netflix on July 18, 2019. You can watch the trailer for the Netflix movie here:
