NBC to air ‘The 50th Anniversary Of The Elvis Comeback Special’ next year
Musical superstars will recreate the 1968 TV spectacular with performances of Presley’s greatest songs.
Come 2019, NBC will be celebrating one of the greatest musical events in television history when it airs 'The 50th Anniversary of the Elvis Comeback Special,' a look back at the network’s iconic 1968 special that put The King of Rock 'n Roll back on the map.
The original special, which aired on Dec 3, 1968, was Elvis' first live television performance since 1961 and a monumental TV event.
It marked Presley's return to live performance after seven years during which his career was centered in the movie business. Presley was unhappy with his distance from musical trends of the time, and the low-quality movie productions he was involved in and the Comeback Special marks a turning point in the King's career.
Dressed in a black leather jumpsuit and playing with a full band in front of an intimate audience, the telecast was hugely popular and was, in fact, the No. 1 rated show on NBC that season.
From Ken Ehrlich, veteran executive producer of the Grammy Awards and a multi-Emmy Award nominee, the two-hour special will feature an all-star group of music superstars who will pay tribute to Elvis, recreating the spectacle with great detail – even the staging – of that legendary night.
In addition to the musical performances, the special will showcase rare Elvis footage, outtakes and interviews from those involved in the special, including director Steve Binder. Whether you’re a lifelong fan or just getting to know Elvis, this is an event not to be missed.
‘The 50th Anniversary Of The Elvis Comeback Special’ airs in 2019 and NBC is yet to release an official date for the premier or a trailer, both of which should be coming soon. So stay tuned!
