House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has received a lot of backlash on the internet for a maskless fundraiser in Napa Valley, California. The event on August 22 saw the 81-year-old politician speaking with the Democratic donors while none of them were covering their faces amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

Pelosi was torched by her critics after New York Times journalist Kenneth P Vogel shared an invitation for the event that showed the prices of the tickets. The starting range of the tickets was $100 and went as high as $29,000. The fundraiser was organized for the vulnerable frontline Democrats, who could lose their seats in the 2022 midterm elections.

Vogel also posted a video of the event in Napa Valley, where no social distancing was followed despite reports stating that from August 13 to 19, the number of coronavirus cases has risen 71% up from the previous week. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has even branded Napa County as a “high level of community transmission.”

Soon after Vogel shared the posts, Pelosi’s critics, especially Republicans, started criticizing her negligence. Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene tweeted, “@SpeakerPelosi does not care about #COVID. Democrats don’t care about covid. They only care about controlling you. Magical covid science: The virus stops spreading the minute you sit down to eat or when you speak in a microphone or if you are one of the elites. Liars.” House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy wrote, “Speaker Pelosi wants to lock you down again while she wines and dines with her political donors. It's utter hypocrisy.”

Conservative pundit Ned Ryun said, “Not seeing those masks there. . . Almost feels like they feel the rules are more a series of suggestions that only the peasants should follow. . .” Former Congresswoman Nan Hayworth even raised the issue of Afghanistan while criticizing Pelosi. Hayworth shared, “Good to see the nation's malefactors having a wonderful time as the torture and slaughter--for which they bear distinct responsibility!--continue in Afghanistan.” “The white people are all free to breath without a mask. The people of color must wear masks - and serve. Stop voting for Democrats…they are laughing at how easy you are to manipulate,” former Acting Director of National Intelligence Richard Grenell added.

However, there were some who defended Pelosi and the event. A supporter tweeted, “I’m guessing everyone was tested or vaccine required at an outdoor event…and the people serving food are wearing masks because they are close to the food….where is the controversy here?” The second one said, “Looks like the catering company is masked, which is likely due to county or even private business regulations. Please don’t try to spin this as racism. Jesus wouldn’t approve.” “Outdoors and likely most attendees are fully inoculated. Very much in contrast to deep south Trump-voting states where COVID is running rampant,” the third added.

A person noted, “Outdoor party is allow just like Trump rally, except these Democrats are likely all vaccinated while Alabama is out of hospital bed and unvaccinated.” Another one mentioned, “I’m sure the people here are vaccinated … unlike the Trump rally last night. Where’s that criticism? You all want a Trump presidency back so bad.”
