'Nancy Drew' Episode 3 brings restless spirits to Horseshoe Bay and one in particular is keen on George

When she gets to work, one accident after another leads her into questioning if she really is cursed
UPDATED OCT 30, 2019

Spoilers ahead for episode 3: 'The Curse of the Dark Storm'

As a storm approaches Horseshoe Bay, the clouds draw closer in to the town and everything suddenly looks sinister. Ace (Alex Saxon) warns the gang about the nor'easter that has come to the bay and how the storm doesn't come alone - it brings along with it restless spirits.

And particularly for George (Leah Lewis) who spent the episode under an apparent curse.

At the end of last week's episode, when George flipped over the bucket of water, it turned out to be blood. According to a legend in Horseshoe Bay, if the water turns into blood, the said person is slotted to die within a year's time. Pretty weird because has the town never heard of pranksters and miscreants?

Anyway, George spends the morning trying to clean the blood off her porch. When she gets to work, one accident after another leads her into questioning if she really is cursed. A coffee pot explodes in her hand just as she is about to pour some coffee. A harpoon almost falls on her head (where in the world is there a harpoon of all things in a small diner like The Claw?).

But the weirdest part of the episode is not even there yet. Mid-way, a woman named Rita (a guest appearance by Zibby Allen) walks into the diner inquiring about job vacancies. But they hardly talk about that as the eerie attacks on George continue happening. The group sits her on a high chair and make a salt circle around her.

Now Rita has an odd air around her. She just turns up at the diner out of the blue and asks for a job. When George is sitting on the high chair, Rita circles around her chatting her up rather creepily. "Are you afraid?" she asks her circling her in an interrogative manner. George confidently tells her that she is aware of superstitions, but Rita is full of surprises.

"It's different in the storm. Restless spirits want a life. And you've already been marked. Your friends have done the best they could to protect you, but the protection only works if you believe," she tells George.

Such foreshadowing really discomforts George who asks her who she is. But Rita doesn't answer her. She simply warns her, "Better not leave that circle".

Exactly then, a bulb is set to fall on her head but Nick (Tunji Kasim) and Nancy (Kennedy McMann) arrive just in time to drag her out of the way. And Rita just vanishes without a trace!

Later, George sees some newspaper cutouts that report about a decapitated tourist - the article carries a photograph of Rita just as she was dressed when she walked into the Claw.

Are restless spirits really out there to get George? Will they return in the next episode?

'Nancy Drew' airs Wednesdays at 9 PM ET/PT on The CW.
