'My 600-lb Life': Gina struggles to lose weight and get approval for weight-loss surgery
Gina Krasley has struggled with her weight ever since she was a young girl. She weighed around 150lbs when she was 10 and by the age of 15, she was 500 lbs. Now, at the age of 28, Gina weighs 606lbs. However, she is ready to make a change in her life.
Gina decides to meet Dr Younan Nowzaradan and he advises her to lose weight if she wants to get approved for the weight loss surgery. Unfortunately, after coming back home Gina feels sick and weak and decides to go back to her old eating habits.
Gina's wife Beth Krasley advises her to stick to her diet but she tries to justify her actions by stating that Beth was still eating fast food and this made it hard for her to stay focused. To make things worse, Gina struggles to keep her mental health at peace as the day to her sister's wedding arrives.
Gina is forced to sit in the car and give her speech as she felt too big to be in the same room as others. Looking at how things were spiraling, Gina finally decides to move to Houston to focus on her weight loss. Beth decided to move with Gina as well.
But before that, Gina decides to meet Dr Nowzaradan for a second appointment. When weighed again, Gina realizes that she has gained 8lbs and now weighs 614lbs. She tried to explain to Dr Nowzaradan that she had turned to her old habits but was more focused now and ready to work on her weight loss.
Dr Nowzaradan decided to be honest with Beth and Gina and revealed that they were being enablers for each other and their family was adding to it. He told them to resolve the issues while dealing with food.
Gina and Beth then attend a therapy session. Gina confesses during the session that they have a communication problem where Beth often talks to her angrily. The therapist explains that they are a team and need to work together.
Beth also reflected on her side of the story. She explained that doing everything at home, from cooking to cleaning, she thinks it is a lot. The therapist explained it is important for them to share their work. The therapist advises Beth to go on a stay-cation while she tells Beth to spend a whole day doing everything by herself.
Meanwhile, as a couple, they are advised to sleep on the same bed. After following the diet that was given by Dr Nowzaradan, Gina decides to meet him after two months. However, she is unhappy as she weighs 609lbs. Even though she had lost 5lbs since last time, Dr Nowzaradan tells her she needed to lose more.
On her next visit, Gina weighs 586lbs and even though Dr Nowzaradan is happy, he tells Gina that she had to lose more weight. Gina confesses that she was eating more food than advised and Dr Nowzaradan asks her to stop immediately.
Gina then decides to visit a nutritionist, who looks into Gina and Beth's refrigerator and pantry to give them an idea of what might be adding to limiting the weight loss. After making the necessary changes, Gina decides to visit Dr Nowzaradan again.
This time, she weighed 543lbs after losing a total of 43lbs. Dr Nowzaradan finally decides to approve Gina for weight loss surgery but asks her to lose 50lbs more in the next three months if she wants the surgery or else he would cancel it.
While Gina was working on her weight loss goal, she decides to mend her relationship as she and Beth start spending more time. After spending three months on losing weight, it is time for Gina to weigh herself again.
Unfortunately, she weighs 556lbs and has gained 13lbs. This makes Dr Nowzaradan deny her the weight loss surgery.
