In the climactic ending of 'Murder for Mortgage: Secrets on Maple Street', tensions between Alex (Thomas Cadrot) and Carlee (Frances Leigh) reach a boiling point. As their relationship deteriorates, Alex takes a desperate step by going to the bank, withdrawing a large sum of money, and hiding it in an unused ice box at their home.

When Carlee arrives home and inquires about his upcoming job interview, Alex brusquely tells her it's with a regional bank and abruptly leaves to take a shower, leaving Carlee feeling both angry and despondent.

That night, as both are asleep, Alex sneaks out of bed to retrieve the hidden money, planning to flee. However, his plans are cut short when an unknown assailant appears with a gun and shoots him, leaving him dead.

Carlee wakes to the sound of the gunshot and finds Alex's lifeless body, crying out his name in despair. The commotion alerts the neighbors, who become cautious and concerned.

The following morning, Detective Lori Vaughn (Lucia Walters) arrives at the scene, explaining to the gathered neighbors how the murder might have occurred and noting that the perpetrator had fled.

A day later, Detective Vaughn visits Carlee, who is in the process of moving out of the house. During their conversation about the money, Carlee excuses herself to get coffee.

As Carlee steps away, Detective Vaughn notices a perfume bottle with a scent that matches the one she remembered from a previous encounter with an attacker in a parking lot, an attacker she had initially thought was Alex.

This realization casts suspicion on Carlee. Suddenly, Carlee returns and attempts to shoot Detective Vaughn, but the gun is unloaded. Carlee is left weaponless and vulnerable.

At that moment, a neighbor enters the house carrying a cake. Acting quickly, Detective Vaughn takes the cake plate and uses it to knock Carlee unconscious. Carlee is subsequently arrested, and the mystery behind the murder and the sinister events on Maple Street is finally unraveled.

In the aftermath, the women of Maple Street gather to thank Detective Vaughn for solving the mystery that had plagued their neighborhood. With Carlee in custody and the truth revealed, Detective Vaughn closes the chapter on the Maple Street mysteries, bringing peace and a sense of closure to the community.

This resolution not only highlights the detective's sharp instincts and dedication but also brings a satisfying conclusion to the film's suspenseful and twist-filled narrative.
