COLUMBIA, SOUTH CAROLINA: A Mummified dead body has been recovered from a donation bin that has not been emptied for many years near Lugoff, South Carolina. The discovery on New Year's eve has triggered an investigation by police and now multiple agencies are carrying out the investigation. The body was found after a passerby caught a foul smell coming from the container on Highway 1.

Though the police are yet to identify the victim and the circumstances which lead someone to possibly dump the female corpse in the bin. As per police reports, the body had been lying in that state for months and that the bin had been covered in rust.

Kershaw County Sheriff, Lee Boan says that the body appears to have been there "for months." South Carolina Law Enforcement Division, who have joined the case investigation, was also requested to investigate the site "as if it were a homicide," according to Sheriff Boan. Although there is no information on how the death occurred, police haven't ruled out anything as of now, WLTX reported. Investigators for now are treating the death as a homicide and took the bin and the body away for further investigation, Boan said.

Initially, the investigators thought the body might be from someone seeking shelter from the cold weather but quickly determined that the remains had been in the bin for at least several months, Kershaw County Coroner David West said as reported by US News. Investigators for now are treating the death as a homicide and took the bin and the body away for further investigation, Kershaw County Sheriff Lee Boan said. The rusty bin had not been opened for many months and had VHS tapes inside of it, West told the outlet.

An autopsy is scheduled for Wednesday at 2 p.m and investigators may provide additional answers including the identity of the deceased. For now, the investigators presume it to be a female body due to the reason that it wore female clothes. West as per WISTV said her body was “virtually mummified,” and “the donation bin had likely not been emptied in many years.”
