Muhammed tops list of most popular boy names while 85 babies born last year were called Bear

The Office for National Statistics, which began recording baby names in 1904, has revealed some interesting data about baby names in the United Kingdom

Muhammed tops list of most popular boy names while 85 babies born last year were called Bear

According to the Office for National Statistics, the most popular baby names in England were Oliver and Olivia for the second year in a row. In the year 2017, the top five names for girls were Olivia, Amelia, Isla, Ava, and Emily. The name Sarah has fallen off the list of top 100 since the records began in the year 1904.

The most popular names for boys were Oliver, Harry, George, Noah, and Jack while, in the capital, the name Muhammad seemed to be amongst the most popular. The name Muhammad also ranked amongst the top names in Yorkshire, the West Midlands, and the Humber. In the top 100, there were three different variations of the name 'Muhammad' and, if the three versions were combined, it would overall be the most popular boy's name.

The names Harry, Oliver, and Jack also showed no signs of slowing down and all the three names have been in the top five for ten years.

Nick Stripe from the Office for National Statistics said, "Although Oliver and Olivia remained the most popular baby names in 2017, some fascinating changes took place beneath them. Leo entered the boys' top 10 for the first time, whilst Hunter rocketed into the top 100, also for the first time, reaching number 78".

"Sarah, the most popular name for baby girls throughout much of the 1970s and 1980s, dropped out of the top 100 for the first time since our records began in 1904. Brand new entries into the top 100 for girls include the names Aurora and Hallie," Stripe continued.

The name Thomas has also fallen off the top 10 list for the first time in 35 years. A majority of the most popular 2007 names such as Thomas, Daniel, Ruby, Grace, Jessica, and Chloe have declined in their popularity.

There are now eight new baby names (two for boys, and six for girls) which are appearing on the top 100 baby name lists.

The new female names were Aurora, Orla, Edith, Bonnie, Lyla and Hallie which replaced the names Lexi, Zoe, Maddison, Sarah, Felicity, and Lydia.

The top 10 boys names are Oliver, Harry, George, Noah, Jack, Jacob, Leo, Oscar, Charlie, and Muhammad, with the name Leo making the top 10 for the first time. This is also the first time that the name Hunter has made the list of top 100 boy names. The top 10 names for girls are Olivia, Amelia, Isla, Ava, Emily, Isabella, Mia, Poppy, Ella, and Lily.  The name Harper has jumped forward 10 steps which is probably a result of Victoria and David Beckham's daughter.

The name Luna also made a massive leap which made the top 100 for the first time given 30 babies were given the name last year. The name Luna's rising popularity could be due to Chrissy Teigen and John Legend naming their daughter Luna.

According to ONS figures, 85 babies born last year were called Bear including the child of Cheryl Cole and Liam Payne. Liam revealed that they chose the name because of the noises that the newborn made. While appearing on 'The Late Night Show', he told James Corden, "When he was born, one of the midwives said he had this thing where if they don't have a good cry they get fluid in the lungs which is quite serious".

"He was going like, 'Grrr, grrr,' when he was sleeping. So I had specialists running in and out of hospital all day, my missus was asleep, I had like 10 doctors come into the room. And in the end, the guy was just like, 'I'm not being funny, there's nothing wrong with him, he just likes to make a lot of noise. And that's carried on ever since, so it just became Bear," he added.
