MTV VMAs 2020: Coldplay wins Best Rock for 'Orphans', angry Evanescence fans question awards' 'credibility'

When everything seems to go wrong, music is the only thing that lights up our moods, especially in our pandemic-stricken world when 'stay at home' is all that's safe to do. Even though there are numerous reasons for us to complain about this year, we just cannot deny the fact that we actually waited for the 2020 MTV Video Music Awards. Right from breathtaking performances to the heartwarming speeches by our favorite winners, this night had the best of all. Coldplay won the Best Rock category with their 'Orphans' video. The song features in their eighth studio album 'Everyday Life'.
Coldplay thanked their fans for their support in a tweet that read, "Heartfelt thank yous : first, to every single one of you who voted for us in the #VMAs- how are we so blessed?? Second, to the legend that is @MatWhitecross. #OneBigBand love c, g, w, j & p"

Earlier, in an interview with BBC Radio 1, when asked about the song, 'Orphan', lead singer Chris Martin said, "Some of it’s very personal, about real things in my life, and some of it’s about things that I see or we see, and some of it’s about trying to empathize about what other people are going through."
Meanwhile, this year's event looks a little different than usual amid the coronavirus pandemic. This year, the ceremony is not taking place at the Barclays Center, as artistes are taking the stage in audience-less locations around New York City to adhere to social distancing guidelines. With performances from BTS, The Black Eyed Peas, DaBaby, The Weeknd, Doja Cat, Maluma with CNCO, and Lady Gaga it all looks like a major music affair.
Who were the other nominees?
Blink-182 – 'Happy Days'
Evanescence – 'Wasted On You'
Fall Out Boy ft. Wyclef Jean – 'Dear Future Self (Hands Up)'
Green Day – 'Oh Yeah!'
The Killers – 'Caution'
As soon as the award was announced, Evanescence fans aired their disappointment on social media. One fan commented, "We, as @evanescence fans, shouldn’t be hating on Coldplay. Let’s vent our frustration on @MTV #VMAs who, in addition to Pop, was built on Rock, Alternative & Grunge music, yet they don’t even have the decency to air the Rock category and name all of the nominees," and "Coldplay’s reward will never reach how @evanescence has connected us all with one of their best videos they’ve ever put out. Our lives have changed forever and we are a big family, if one of us falls we all fall too. There’s no reward that can better that. @vmas"

And some even questioned MTV's 'credibility' with one fan writing, "The #VMAs are fun, and I’m not allergic to new music (Doja Cat!), but MTV lacks credibility beyond its young demographic. Machine Gun Kelly wins best alternative? Coldplay wins best rock?" Another user wrote, "Coldplay won Best Rock and Machine Gun Kelly won Best Alternative. My request for a recount has been sent..."
