Woman tells 9-year-old not to invite autistic classmate on his birthday because he 'created a scene' at another party, gets slammed

The internet was outraged after it was revealed that a 9-year-old's mother decided to exclude an autistic child from her son's birthday party while inviting the rest of his class.

The anonymous woman posted her story on Reddit's "Am I the Asshole?" forum. She said that, while giving out invitations for his birthday party, she told her son to exclude a "high functioning autistic child," whom she named "David" for the sake of the post.

"The school my son goes to has a program for special needs kids where they are put into a 'normal' class once a week," she said. This is done in order to teach the other kids "not to discriminate against other special needs people" while also helping such children in question with their socialization skills.

The mother said that while she had nothing against David or his mother as they were "doing the best they can", she refused to invite him for her son's party after hearing that he had created quite a scene at another party he was invited to.

"I don't know if I believe it, but parents who were there say that it was because he wanted to open presents like the birthday boy and, when told 'no', freaked out," she said.

She added that her son's birthday party was being held at an arcade that would pose "logistical problems" for David.

However, when David's mother came to know about her son's exclusion, she became furious.

"David's mother called me last night and confronted me about this," the mum continued. "She told me I am awful for excluding her son and that I'm teaching my son to discriminate."

She was also criticized by David's mother for "assuming what her son can and can't do" before the latter hung up the phone.

After the incident, David's mum had written a "passive-aggressive post on Facebook and many other parents are siding with her."

The mother's Reddit post sparked an array of mixed reactions from users on the platform.

"I understand your concern about the meltdown. But you could have spoken to his parents beforehand about the environment and potential ways to mitigate that. You could have spoken to your son's teacher to see if she or he has advice for how David is in group situations," one user wrote.

"This would have been a good chance to teach your son to include people and instead you taught him it's okay to exclude someone if their disability makes your fun times slightly more difficult," said another.

One user, who kind of sympathized with her, said, "You should be allowed to invite whoever you want to your party. But going into school and handing invitations out in public is a d*** move."
