Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) said on Thursday that he would "absolutely" support Donald Trump if the former president is the 2024 Republican presidential nominee.

“Well there’s a lot to happen between now and '24,” McConnell said in an interview with Fox News. “I’ve got at least four members that I think are planning to run for president plus some governors and others; There’s no incumbent, a wide-open race and should be fun for you all to cover.”

When asked if he would support Trump, who has hinted at a second run, became the Republican nominee, he said, “Absolutely.” GOP Sens Josh Hawley of Missouri and Tom Cotton of Arkansas as well as former UN ambassador Nikki Haley have also been mentioned as potential candidates.

His remarks come weeks after he voted to acquit Trump at his impeachment trial while also criticizing his "disgraceful dereliction of duty" on January 6, 2021. The Senate voted 57-43 to convict him but fell short of the two-thirds majority needed.

"There's no question, none, that President Trump is practically and morally responsible for provoking the events of the day. No question about it," McConnell said at the time. "The people who stormed this building believed they were acting on the wishes and instructions of their president."

McConnell stated that he voted not guilty on the single charge of incitement of insurrection because Trump's no longer in office and not because he believed that Trump didn't drive the crowd that stormed the Capitol, which resulted in five deaths. Later, Trump slammed McConnell in a statement after the impeachment vote as a "political hack" who "doesn't have what it takes” to lead the party. "The Republican Party can never again be respected or strong with political 'leaders' like Sen. Mitch McConnell at its helm," Trump said in a 600-word statement where he also blamed McConnell for Republicans' losing two key Senate seats in a special election in Georgia.

As soon as McConnell's comment of him backing the former President for 2024 came to light, people started slamming him, and in no time his nickname, 'Moscow Mitch', which was given to him back in 2019, by MSNBC host Joe Scarborough started spreading. His name even inspired a song from rock musician Ben Folds, who performed the tune at a show in New York.

A Twitter user slammed him saying, "And confirming that #MoscowMitch is 100% who we thought he was A man of no integrity No soul No humanity No desire for accountability No ability to act like a normal person And only cares about control Just like the @GOP and the rest of the #MAGA zealots." Another shared McConnell's statement which he gave against Trump during his impeachment trial and wrote, "same guy just said he’d support Trump in 2024 Republican voters are the dumbest motherf*ckers #MoscowMitch."

Some angry Internet users wrote, "#MoscowMitch@LeaderMcConnell you are a traitor to America. #Trump is doing everything he can to get retribution on you and you are no better than Ted Cruz" and "#MoscowMitch@LeaderMcConnell has no moral fiber in his being."

A tweet read, "Next time there’s any doubt, just take a deep breath and remember that #MoscowMitch cannot do the right thing, ever!" While one person made a bizarre comment saying, "#MoscowMitch already looks like he has been poisoned by #CocaineTrump."
