More women getting ‘designer vaginas’ through surgery because of TIGHT CLOTHING

LONDON, UK: A top cosmetic surgeon with over a decade of experience has claimed that the demand for “designer vaginas” has skyrocketed lately because of tight clothing, such as leggings. Dr John Skevofilax, chief surgeon at Signature Clinics, is reportedly an expert in labiaplasty, which is a “surgery to reduce the size of the labia minora – the flaps of skin either side of the vaginal opening,” the National Health Service (NHS) states.

The NHS also explains that girls below 18 years should not consider it "because the labia continues to develop beyond puberty into early adulthood” and “it does not cause any problems, which is why labiaplasty is rarely available on the NHS.” Reportedly, the cost of the surgery comes between $2,411 to $4,822.

Dr Skevofilax, whose clinics are in London, Cardiff, Birmingham, Glasgow as well as Manchester, told Daily Mail that last year, he did nearly 50 labiaplasties. But in 2022, that number has already been crossed. He explained the reason behind it as he said: “Exercise clothing is a little bit tighter and it's formfitting so it does put pressure on the area. They experience pain, discomfort in general, chaffing, a lot of women actually will feel so uncomfortable that they avoid trying to wear this type of clothing. It's all really interlinked, choosing a pair of leggings which causes discomfort and which in turn draws attention to the labia and the need for surgery.”

As per reports, leggings became a fashion trend in the 1970s and the credit goes to Debbie Harry and the late Olivia Newton-John. However, in recent years, the attire started selling as skin-tight sports leggings, popularly known as “athleisure”. The plastic surgeon asserted that the discomfort women face in these “athleisure” is basically the real reason behind the rise in the procedure and not any aesthetic or unrealistic figure shown in x-rated films.

Dr Skevofilax told the publication, “Women should be able to wear whatever they want to wear. If they choose tight clothing, for instance yoga pants because they are following a specific fashion trend or just because it's simply more fitting for this type of exercise, they should be able to do so without anxiety and ‘a bite of the lip’ of what's to come.”

“In fact, I have never had a patient say: ‘I want my vagina to look like such and such a porn star,’” he added. However, he also noted that he gives counseling to his patients before operating on them. “By doing this we can make sure people are making the right decisions for themselves,” he said.

Meanwhile, according to the NHS, for a labiaplasty, a surgeon can use either a general anaesthetic or a local anaesthetic with sedation. “It involves shortening or reshaping the vaginal lips. The unwanted tissue is cut away with a scalpel or laser. The loose edge may be stitched with fine, dissolvable stitches. The whole procedure takes about 1 to 2 hours. You may need up to 2 weeks off work to recover. It can take a couple of months for the skin to fully heal,” it adds.
