Why did the monk kill the nuns?

Teresa, who earlier hid important facts about the night of the crime, finally opens up to Sam Spade. She says that Philippe visited the chapel some time ago and met a young nun. A month later, he returned with a boy and asked Teresa to hide him until he found a place for him.

While Teresa was in the bell tower with the boy, she heard the children scream. She runs back to the chapel and that's when she comes to know about the monk intruding into the chapel and threatening the nuns.

After locking up all the children inside a chamber to keep them safe, Teresa holds a knife and walks towards the threat.

She sees the monk holding the nuns at gunpoint and asks them about the whereabouts of the young boy. As nuns fail to answer his query, he shoots them one by one.

The young African nun, Soeur Angelique, was the last one to be shot. Before her brutal killing by the monk, she says, "The Mahdi waits for us."

The monk then spots Teresa being a witness. However, she escapes after attacking him with a knife.

Who is the little boy and where did he escape?

The brief appearance of the young nun who met Spade at the gates of the chapel holds deep secrets. A locket is found around her neck with a photo of herself and a little boy named Zayd. We assume that the nun and the boy shared a mother-son relationship.

It is clearly established that Angelique and Philippe are connected in some ways. Spade, through Henri, found out that Philippe works for army intelligence and that he hid a young woman with him at the base for some time.

While Angelique joined the church, Philippe too returned to the town after several years. We can assume that Philippe and Angelique had arranged for the boy to be in Bozouls.

The young boy, whom Teresa hid in the bell tower on her father's instruction, escaped when the monk attacked the chapel.

Towards the end of the episode, we see that the boy is still alive and is hiding at Samir’s house.

After a work-related discussion with Marguerite (Louise Bourgoin), the club owner, Samir finds the boy hiding behind the curtain, evidently scared and holding a gun.
