Why is dead Mongol leader Genghis Khan being canceled in 2020? Internet says 'we're just a few centuries late'
If you thought the global pandemic is the single most important issue at hand, social media might disagree with you. At least a few think, there’s a need to discuss few other issues such as canceling Genghis Khan, yes the Mongol leader who established the largest land empire in history, according to History.com. According to the website, Khan was born around 1162 near the border between modern Mongolia and Siberia. He had united the nomadic tribes of the Mongolian plateau and conquered huge chunks of central Asia and China. The website further claims at their peak, the Mongols controlled almost 11 and 12 million contiguous square miles areas. Khan died in 1227 during a fight against the Chinese kingdom of Xi Xia, as per the website.
Yes, we were also confused that after ‘cancel’ trends involving Hollywood celebrities, why is social media after someone who died almost 700 years ago. After a bit of digging, it appears a user had started a thread and opinions about the leader who had a reputation for being ruthless and scary. It was posted on August 13 and since then had got more than 2,000 retweets and comments and more than 5,000 likes. The user tweeted: THREAD: Genghis Khan did to central Asia what islamic invaders did to India, maybe worse. He single-handedly killed 11% of world population at the time. Yet some want to glorify him as a hero conquerer. That's your personal choice but objectively, Genghis Khan was a barbarian.” This was the first of a series of tweets about the leader.

According to History.com, his descendants, including Ogodei and Khubilai, took control of Eastern Europe, the Middle East and the rest of China, among other places. The Mongols had invaded Japan and Java before their empire broke apart in the 14th century. As per the website, the last ruling descendent of Khan was deposed in 1920.
