'Money Heist' aka 'La Casa de Papel': Tokyo and Rio may not get back together in part 4 after their relationship puts the team in jeopardy
Headed by El Professor, 'Money Heist' brings a team of robbers together for the ultimate heist of the Royal Mint of Spain in parts one and two. The group, who pick up names of cities — Tokyo, Nairobi, Moscow, Berlin, Rio, Denver or Oslo — and move on to chalk out another assault on the Bank of Spain in part three.
Tokyo (Úrsula Corberó) is one of the most powerful female characters and the narrator of the show. A free spirit, she makes hasty decisions and her lust for control often puts the other team members into a spot. Right at the beginning, she goes against the rules and starts an affair with the young tech expert in the team — Rio (Miguel Herrán).
While it is clear that he is in love with her, Tokyo isn't really looking for a "serious" or "long-term" connection. When she tries to clear it out, he doesn't entertain her thoughts and eventually, she gives in to her feelings for the moment. Soon, her impulsive streak leads to a bullet war with the cops and Rio is injured.
Tokyo's deep concern about his well-being gives the Professor and the other members a hint that the two might be in a relationship. She is bold enough to deny all the allegations to the Professor but she does care for Rio. "In the end, love is a good reason for everything to fall apart," she says in a scene. Meanwhile, Rio continues to be head-over-heels in love with her. In a particular scene, he says: "When I see you walking around here, my heart pounds, just knowing you're near me. Our sex makes me float around the room."
However, Tokyo is a brat; selfish and unstable in her choices that have already caused way too much trouble for the others. Tokyo and Rio are spending a relaxed vacation at the onset of season three. However, when he gets caught by Panama authorities after a location leak, Tokyo takes it upon herself to bring all the members out of hiding to rescue him. While they are successful in getting Rio back in a trade for several hostages, the two decide to end their affair.
"We had our fun, we had good moments but that wasn’t enough. We got wrapped up in all of this," she tells him, confessing how she almost got caught up in an affair with Denver (Jaime Lorente). "Now, I’m wondering the same thing as you — how were we able to stay together for so long?" Denver tries to talk to Rio to get back with Tokyo but he seems to have made up his mind. Her tears and drama make little sense when the blame of the break up is put on her.
So, will the two get back together in season four or has their relationship hit a roadblock. The latter seems more likely since Rio seems to have made up his mind. "While I can't say that I particularly cared for their romance (both characters acted so stupid and annoying because of this relationship), I don't think that we are supposed to believe that they broke up when they went in different directions," a user wrote on Reddit.
Part four is currently in production. Pina hinted at the renewal of the show at a press conference: "They're [the characters are] a group of people who still have a lot to say. It took us quite a long time to decide, we wanted to respect our work."
