'Mom' returned with its eighth installment but after a major cast-shake up. Anna Faris, who played the role of Christy, announced that she would not be appearing in Season 8. As Christy is the protagonist of the show along with Bonnie (Allison Janney), fans were wondering how the show would address her departure. In the premiere, it is revealed that Christy has left for law college.

The episode begins with a tearful Bonnie dropping her off at the airport with her husband Adam (William Fichtner). Bonnie says, "Every mom dreams of the day where they get to drop their 42-year-old daughter to go to school. I did it all by myself." Their troubled and dysfunctional relationship has come a long way and Bonnie is proud of Christy for taking this step.

Later in the episode, Bonnie with her friends Jill (Jaime Pressly, Wendy (Beth Hall) and Marjorie (Mimi Kennedy) plan a surprise party for Tammy. There are many scandalous revelations that come with 'Never Have I Ever' and copious amounts of alcohol. However, in the middle of the party, Marjorie gets upset and plans to go home. She tells Bonnie that she has a stent in her heart and is fearful about the future. The episode ends on a wholesome note, as the gang celebrates togetherness.

In the second episode, Bonnie and Adam try to have a happy wedding anniversary but Marjorie's presence threatens to ruin it. The synopsis for the second episode reads: "Bonnie and Adam regret spending their first wedding anniversary with Marjorie and her new boyfriend; Jill's attempt at a good deed becomes a moral dilemma."

There were mixed reactions to the first episode, as fans found it 'super weird' without Anna Faris, while others still enjoyed it. 'Mom' co-creator Gemma Baker told TVLine that Faris’ departure would stop Christy from getting her happy ending.

“One of the beautiful things about recovery is that quite often people’s lives get bigger and better than they could have imagined,” she said. “And that will be Christy’s experience. We are pretty sure that our audience, many of whom have been rooting for Christy since the pilot, will be happy for her and satisfied by her new path.”

'Mom' airs on CBS on Thursdays at 9 pm.
