Will Amazon's 'Modern Love' restore our faith in true love? We are willing to bet our money on it

UPDATED AUG 6, 2019

When was the last time you switched on your television and got a chance to watch a love story so real that you could see hope for yourself on the horizon?

Probably a very, very long time. Or perhaps, never. Romance, for the big and the small screens, is spoilt and contaminated with unrealistic standards and expectations – both of which rarely mirror that trials and tribulations of love.

In real life, love is messy, complicated, fun, easy, yet difficult. Outside the screen, love doesn't fall into your lap only because you are looking for it. In real life, it is not all that easy for love to find its way to you – the way it does on the screen.

'Modern Love' is an anthology series based on a running New York Times column that the publication describes as "weekly essays that explore joys and tribulations of love". The anthology television series is based on the newspaper column and podcast.

According to Amazon Prime, the show is "a romantic comedy anthology series that explores love in all of its complicated and beautiful forms. Each standalone episode of the half-hour series will bring some of the most beloved stories to life with a stellar cast."

"We know the ins and outs of romantic films so well. We're almost ahead of them. At the moment, as audience members, I'm not sure the three-act structure is as satisfying as it was 20 years ago. So for me, it was really exciting – this was a way to tell a genre of story that I love telling in a way that felt really fresh," Anne Hathaway was reported saying. The actress stars as a woman based on author Terri Cheney, who has bipolar disorder.

The romantic series boasts of a star-studded cast from the likes of Anne Hathaway, Gary Carr, Olivia Cooke, Dev Patel, Julia Garner, Shea Whigham, Tina Fey, Catherine Keener, Brandon Victor Dixon, Sofia Boutella Cristin Milioti, Andy Garcia and John Slattery.

John Carney will be executive producing the show with Todd Hoffman and Sam Dolnick and Choire Sicha of The New York Times. Trish Hoffman will be co-executive producer.

Eight episodes long, 'Modern Love' is set to premiere on Amazon Prime Video on October 18, 2019. You can watch the teaser here:
