‘Modern Family’ Season 11: Why Gloria and Jay make a convincing couple despite their age difference and contrasting values

The patriarch of ‘Modern Family’, Jay Pritchett (Ed O Neill), and his trophy wife Gloria Delgado (Sofia Vergara) are one of the most atypical yet groundbreaking couples we have witnessed on television over the years. The single mother from Columbia and the founder of Pritchett’s Closets and Blinds hail from backgrounds that are a world apart, but their love for each other eliminates all sorts of differences between them, including the whopping age gap.

Since the inception of the show, Jay and Gloria have been subjected to merciless trolls and online trashing for several reasons. While some expressed disappointment in the creators’ decision to let Jay have a woman of his daughter’s age for a wife, other had qualms about their contrasting ideologies and cultural differences.

However, despite all the backlash, the duo has entertained us for eleven whole seasons as one of the most convincing couples of the Pritchett-Dunphy-Tucker family. To be frank, it indeed was awkward to watch Jay’s son-in-law drool over his sensual Columbian wife. But that is only an honest representation of what forms a new-age modern family, predominantly defined by the unconventional portrayal of the characters.

Although Gloria always took pride in her expensive taste and materialistic values, her character is defined by other factors that make up for her snobbish behavior. For instance, when Jay decides to go under the knife for a facelift to match with his pretty wife’s beauty standards, Gloria bluntly disapproves of his choice and makes him feel loved for what he is.

When an aged Jay introduced his young bride to his family, they could only look at Gloria as a gold digger who married him for all the wealth he possesses. However, their perception changed upon realizing how Gloria herself was suffering from an identity crisis and going to hell and back to become a part of their judgmental family.

Similarly, Jay has played his part well by being a desirable husband to Gloria and father to their son Joe.

As the final season of ‘Modern Family’ nears the end of its run on television, we are waiting with bated breath to see what the creators have planned for Gloria and Jay’s future.

Episode 8 of ‘Modern Family’ will air on ABC, on December 4.
